Hironatashima,

Is /dev/dri/card0 present but your user does not have permission to access it.
The groups command for that user needs to include video in the output.

If /dev/dri/card0 is missing entirely, please pastebin your kernel .config file.
Its a piece of kernel missing somewhere.

The output of lsmod, after Xorg has started might be useful too.

lsmod:

/usr/src/linux/.config:

https://paste.pound-python.org/show/JFiiHcQBLMzC0fDYVRvl/

/dev/dri/ doesn't seem to exist at all.

Hironatashima,

Are you sure that's the configuration from the kernel you are running?

It says
Code:
# CONFIG_DRM_VBOXVIDEO is not set
and I thought we turned that on a day or so ago.
Run
Code:
uname -a

Code:
$ uname -a
Linux NeddySeagoon_Static 4.16.0-rc3 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 27 20:01:09 GMT 2018 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

The date and time is the build date/time of the running kernel. The version and build number are there too.

Code:
/usr/src/linux/
use the symlink to find a kernel tree.
What does readlink /usr/src/linux say?
Here, I get
Code:
$ readlink /usr/src/linux
linux-4.15-rc4
so I'm not running that kernel.

I don't know if that's the right one then.... Here's what my symlink stuff says:

Code:

hirotux ~ # uname -a
Linux hirotux 4.15.11-gentoo #1 SMP Tue Mar 20 09:58:01 EDT 2018 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
hirotux ~ # uname -r
4.15.11-gentoo
hirotux ~ # readlink /usr/src/linux
linux-4.15.11-gentoo
hirotux ~ #

It looks like everything checks out, though. I'm having an issue with the virtualbox-guest-additions modules loading as well.... I think that's a separate issue though.[/code]

well this is the error log of it. trying to rebuild the additions for the new kernel is failing.

Hironatashima,

So far so good.

That kernel was built at Tue Mar 20 09:58:01 EDT 2018.
Its .config file should be older, since the configuration is set before the build.
However, if you have run menuconfig since then and saved the file, the timestamp will have changed.

Lets try another more direct approach.
Your kernel config has
Code:
CONFIG_IKCONFIG_PROC=y
That provides /proc/config.gz which is the config of the running kernel.

What does
Code:
zgrep DRM_VBOXVIDEO /proc/config.gz
show?
If its off, you need to fix that.

Code:

# CONFIG_DRM_VBOXVIDEO is not set

what....? ok, I'm going to run menuconfig again, and see, set it, recompile, etc.

I just set it, and genkernel is doing it's thing now.

Current update:

Code:

hiro@hirotux ~ $ zgrep DRM_VBOXVIDEO /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_DRM_VBOXVIDEO=m

and now to check out the Xorg.0.log, right?

So doing a quick sweep of my log:

glamoregl still is a bust, however:

AIGLX Still fails, but it looks like it supplements something else, and I really don't know where I'm going with this. Endstate, what are your thoughts NeddySeagoon?

Hironatashima,

Its back to modeset instead of vboxvideo, so that seems to be a step backwards.

Code:
CONFIG_DRM_VBOXVIDEO=m
looks good.
Does the module load?
It should be listed in lsmod.

As /dev/dri/card0 exists now, I'll guess it is loaded.

It wants to use
Code:
[    47.522] (==) Matched vboxvideo as autoconfigured driver 0

Then doesn't.

I don't see any hints as to why.

-- edit --

VirtualBox installs against the 4.16-rc3 kernel. Let me see if I can recreate it here.

Vboxvideo loads no problem there.

I don't see /dev/dri/card0 though....

Also, I'm not quite sure what to do with virtualbox-guest-additions now.... it fails to rebuild, I cannot emerge it again, it fails with the same error.

here's the error dump:

They may be connected.

Hironatashima,

Code:
make[2]: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-4.15.11-gentoo'
Makefile:635: arch/amd64/Makefile: No such file or directory

That has to be a bug. There is no arch/amd64/ dir in the kernel and never has been.
Its x86 for 32 bit and x86_64 for 64 bit.

Cheat a little ...
In /usr/src/linux-4.15.11-gentoo/arch/ make a symlink called amd64 that points to x86_64.

NeddySeagoon,

So here is my pastebin:

The first part never showed up before. I've done as you suggested, and think that I've made it farther, but now it looks like virtualbox additions is looking for a different kernel build, but my intent is to rebuild it for this kernel.

I'm not sure if virtualbox-guest-additions-5.1.32 are compatible with kernel 4.15.
Version 5.2.6 with workaround or 5.2.8 I think are compatible

Thanks for the input. I think I will try this out in a little bit.

Hironatashima,

Thats a test for for two files that are created when you configure the kernel.
Code:
test -e include/generated/autoconf.h -a -e include/config/auto.conf || (      \
echo >&2;                     \
echo >&2 "  ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.";      \
echo >&2 "         include/generated/autoconf.h or include/config/auto.conf are missing.";\
echo >&2 "         Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it.";   \
echo >&2 ;                     \
/bin/false)

The lines fly by in the compiler output when the test passes. They are printed on the console when the test fails.
When that happens, you don't see the echo >&2; elements of the commands. The echo gets executed.

Your line 5701
Code:
cc1: some warnings being treated as errors
makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
That should not be needed in released code. Developers are supposed to see those errors and fix the codebase before release.

I thought virtualbox-guest-additions-5.1.32 was fairly old. Its always a problem keeping things that build against the kernel up to date with the kernel.
virtualbox-guest-additions is one such package. Follow fedeliallalineas advice.
Code:
eix virtualbox-guest-additions
* app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions
     Available versions:  5.1.32 (~)5.1.34 (~)5.2.6 (~)5.2.8 {X KERNEL="linux"}
5.1.32 is stable.

If you unmask app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions like you did the kernel, you will get 5.2.8.

ok, I did the unmasking thing. I had to emerge -C the old virtualbox-guest-additions to get the new stuff to emerge properly, but it got done.

Everything seems to be working well now. Shared Folder is back, no more errors, it seems, aside from the kernel service not loading, but from my research, that error is not actually an issue. Otherwise, everything else looks good.
