I had gotten X running, and even KDE running as well, no sound though.
To get sound running with alsa, had to recompile the kernel with DEVFS support.

devfs compiled and amixer shows sound working.

Now when I run startx I get a black screen, cannot Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
Just before the black screen I see
# hostname: unknown host

only error in /var/log/XFree86.0.log is
# (WW) Open Apm Failed /dev/apm_bios no such file or directory.
/dev directory does not have a apm_bios file

If I Alt+F2 to get a new console and Alt+F1 to go back the screen reappears with
# XIO fatal eror 104 Connection reset by peer on X server ":0.0"

I have tried searching the forum but can not find an answer to this problem.

I had the same proble with X going to a blank screen. When I recompiled the kernel with agpgarp support for my chipset, everything works.

Yesterday after doing kernel compiles several times, I tracked down my blank screen problem source. GRSECURITY = HIGH -> Blank Screen. GRSECURITY=MEDIUM -> kde. Eveything else was kept the same.
