My guess is to avoid merging two different processes under the same word.
In Gentoo, emerge includes fetching, configuring (for compilation), compiling (usually, but not always), installing, and registering the activity in a package manager. |

Portage is based on the BSD Ports system.
The e* names come from Enoch, which was the distro that drobbins was working on that became Gentoo. _________________ Regards,

compile is only one of the several phases and not even necessarily executed. |

Nor is everything compiled, even when src_compile is used.
make can be used to build anything ;-) |
