Hi Gentoo users, videophiles and audiophiles in particular!

On my usual Gentoo high, I've decided it is necessary to do some fairly intensive video editing on my box. As it was built for physics simulations I've got an intel i7, 16 Gib of ram and not much else. I'm assuming a high(er) end video card is a must. Recommendations?

Then there is the actual software. Are there satisfactory open source projects? I've had openshot installed in the past but I recall it being a bit crashy. Are there better alternatives?

A large mechanical hard drive will also be part of the package for video storage/working area. Are any particular file systems recommended.

Video source will be from GoPro or similar. I'm assuming that I should be able to at least rip the video of the thing.

Thank you for any advice!

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

I think your i7 graphics will do just fine. Regarding software, there is Avidemux for simple editing, for effects you need to get something like ... I don't know: https://itsfoss.com/best-video-editing-software-linux/

kdenlive seems to be functional, but i just used it to output a 4k demo, and for some reason it's got some flickering white bars all through it. took me like 3 days to render.

I'm not picky but I've seen people recommend XFS for dedicated video editing drives.
kdenlive is pretty easy to pick up but I've had similar experiences as above, it's hard to make it produce decent output and it uses a weird backend that's a sort-of-abstraction-over-but-not-compatible-with ffmpeg. Blender does video editing too, if you can stomach it.

I used to use Cinelerra, and there's a fork I can't remember the name of that I think is more up-to-date. It's not very user-friendly, but is supposed to be pretty powerful if you don't mind taking the time to futz with it.

You don't need a fancy card for video editing - fancy cards are for handling games and intensive simulation-type stuff. I always just set the video driver to xorg in my video editor - it's the fastest one.
