I installed gnome on full encrypted disk with openrc (not systemd) referring to https://wycd.net/posts/2015-01-04-gentoo-full-disk-encryption-lvm-on-luks.html and https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GNOME/GNOME_Without_systemd.

Now I'm wondering whether installing systemd on encrypted desktop. Theoretically, it looks possible, but actually, every time I tried, I failed (I tried 3 or 4 times). It boots from /lib/systemd/systemd successfully, but after that, the kernel couldn't find any partitions except for root; ie, it cannot find /dev/vg1/boot, /dev/vg1/swap, /dev/vg1/home, and /dev/vg1/var (I don't make partitions for /opt or /usr).

Anyone succeeded to make a systemd Gentoo system on encrypted drive?

I'm installing on a notebook, so an encrypted system is preferable.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I cannot see why not. I have gentoo systemd genkernel on an encrypted drive but using plasma.

The setup wiki you have linked to has too many partitions for me.

Code:

lsblk
NAME                    MAJ:MIN RM   SIZE RO TYPE  MOUNTPOINT
sda                       8:0    0 931.5G  0 disk
├─sda1                    8:1    0     1G  0 part  /boot
└─sda2                    8:2    0 930.3G  0 part
  └─root_sda2-ext4-root 253:0    0 930.3G  0 crypt
    ├─ext4-root         253:1    0 920.3G  0 lvm   /
    └─ext4-swap         253:2    0    10G  0 lvm   [SWAP]
sr0                      11:0    1  1024M  0 rom

I like to keep things relatively simple.

Also, if you have root mounted you are so close, you just need to tidy mountpoints or so.

I am having issues with the new stable systemd-236-r5 and systemd-journal but this looks to be a permissions issue, I can always rollback.

I think I used this wiki but it is a bit old.

good luck :-)

Thank you. But in my case, boot partition is also encrypted in /dev/sda1 (so only one partition). With my reference, it was the only option because my computer is old and not uefi enabled and it looks safe :) plasma or gnome doesn't matter. But now I could install gnome up and running, so I'm contented.

Thank you.
