Hello. I have a problem with my gentoo gateway server.

At times of high traffic the process 'ksoftirqd/3' up to 100% cpu. The machine starts dropping packets and the network speed is extremely low.

top shows this:

I have changed one ethernet card and the problem is the same.

Might be related to Realtek NICs, you could try if Realtek proprietary driver manages to do it better and blacklist the kernel integrated drivers module.

Hello.

I have solved the problem. I don't have irq balance in my machine but the solution is valid for me at the moment. I have moved irq interrupts caused by ethernet card between cores of my cpu...


1. Identify the IRQ number of IRQ INTERRUPTS by ethernet card:

Code:

**The IRQ NUMBER is 32 for this ethernet card...

2. Now we have to indicate that we'll use the core 0 of ours cpu to work with this interrupts:

echo 1 >/proc/irq/32/smp_affinity


** /proc/irq/IRQ_NUMBER/smp_affinity **


With this, we have moved all the works of the 3º core for 1º core. All works about network (for my 3 ethernet cards) were being processed for 3º core of cpu, my solution: assign irq interrupts from a ethernet card from third core to first core of my cpu. Now I have 1 ethernet card working in first core and the other two in the third core.


With this i have solved my problem at the moment. In a short time I'll try rtl8169 propietary module because I think that the problem is with the kernel module which doesn't work well with irq balance like said @P.Kosunen.
