Not digital, he could use it as the last stage, but it's not enough. I mean you get hi quality mp4 from spotify, decode and interpolate it to 96khz 24bit on the raspi, and than what? He should connect the onboard audio card to an expensive ampli? Terrible ...
He needs a dac together with the analog amplifier, maybe a good one with jitter correction to convert it to hi quality analog signal and send it to the (valve) amplifier that wll use it to drive the speakers. With a true digital instead the board send the interpolated PCM digitally to the amplifier and it gets diretly converted to drive the speakers.....

He could just use an iPod, instead.

I was talking about something like this:

It accepts digital input (USB/SPDIF) and uses it directly to drive the speackers, it is called PCM-PWM, it would be a great ampli for the raspi ... (or whatever board).

There are also cheaper true digital amplifiers, probably also from yamaha :-)
If I were building a listening room, I'd go with components. I'm looking to build a small, mostly self contained device that is affordable for having multiple devices in different rooms. Large "rack sized" components are the antithesis of what I'm trying to piece together.

How about the last link I posted? It doesn't require a rack but a table-top and you can plug in your iPod.

You should really get an iPod.
