Video playback and sound have stopped working after a world update. The update upgraded the following packages:

I built a new kernel after the update, but I still have the problem if I boot into the previous kernel.

One strange feature of the problem is that when trying to play a video or listen to a music file, the progress bar moves at about 3 times the normal speed, but the video is frozen and there is no sound.

I suspected ffmpeg so I masked the package and downgraded to 3.3.5, but the result was the same.

Could any of the other updated packages have caused this problem?

It's not clear if you have lost sound or not ; it's only clear you have lost sound while playing a video.

So make it all clear: does sound work? (check it with aplay or whatever simple tool to play sound).
Because if your new kernel add sound trouble, fixing sound trouble will certainly fix your video trouble when using your player.

If I use gxine, I can play a sound file or a video. My main application for music and video is the BBC iPlayer through Firefox, and that is where I encountered the problem. I've tried some other radio stations that I sometimes use and they too do not work now. So the problem seems to be limited to streaming through Firefox. I don't have any other browser installed, but I will install one to determine whether this is just a Firefox problem.

I installed Opera and it works. So this problem is just within Firefox.
