I might be using the wrong subject line due to a lack of understanding, but I would appreciate help understanding.
So here's what I want to know:
I have a computer that functions as my primary digital audio workstation. It runs Gentoo Studio and uses JACK. If I go with the bare-bones defaults and let Xorg handle everything, using Nouveau/nv drivers - which is the default for Gentoo Studio - I get many xruns, often two per second. If I downgrade rt-sources to 4.9 and emerge nvidia-drivers - I forget the version but it works with rt-sources 4.9 - and eselect opengl to this driver, I never get xruns even at a latency of 5 ms.
Note that rt-sources 4.9 and Nouveau/nv causes xruns, so I'm ruling out the kernel sources as the culprit. I think - I dunno, I'm not an expert at this aspect of things.
Also note that this applies to Nvidia graphics. I have the same installation of Gentoo Studio on machines not using Nvidia and this is not an issue.
So what is it about using the open-source Nvidia drivers that causes xruns where using the proprietary driver does not? _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org
