Edited: it seems for kde5 it's kde-frameworks/kio, you can completely ignore the thread.

Hello.

I was just greeted with this:

Code:

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- kde-apps/kdebase-kioslaves-16.04.3-r2::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Andreas Sturmlechner <asturm@gentoo.org> (12 Dec 2017)
# Depends on dead kdelibs4/qt4, unmaintained upstream. No port to
# KF5 released. If you depend on this package, please help test KF5-based
# amarok-9999 in KDE ebuild repository to decide on a possible snapshot.
# Possible alternatives are media-sound/cantata (an awesome mpd client),
# media-sound/clementine and media-sound/tomahawk (the latter also declared
# unmaintained upstream).
# Bug #635468. Masked for removal in 30 days.

First, is the fact that those "alternatives" have nothing to do with kioslaves (either that or it's about time I enter a psychiatric).

Second, and what worries me more: is there any true alternative to, lets say, keep up and running dolphin's ability to access smb:// working? Is there something I am missing here? I hope so...

I don't care much about the rest of IO slaves, if at all. But a file manager without samba capabilities these days is like a bulb that doesn't give any light in the visible specter in my corridor.

Thanks.

kdebase-kioslaves has been doing nothing since dolphin is kf5-based (years). Slot 4 vs. slot 5, you know...? :)

It is part of the amarok mask because that was its last remaining rdep.

I see, I guess I really haven't been able to get the hang of the package nomenclature since 4.x times, I am more and more confused about all this kde stuff each day. I'll unmerge it then, and come back if there's any issue. I haven't used amarok like in ten years, so no worry about that.

Thanks for the clarification.

About that nomenclature, it is all explained there: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE

Heh, I kept getting bitten with the constant moving of those packages too! Played merry hell with keeping my KDE3.5 from being messed up!

I really really wish they'd called them e.g. kde5-blahblah; Would have saved a lot of package.*, world and db rewriting too!

Cyker, your issues with out-of-tree ebuilds are entirely offtopic here.
