Hi!

I am using thunar (xfce4) with thumbler and ffmpegthumbnailer. The problem is that I have no video thumbs, although I do have thumbs for pictures (jpeg, png, etc.). Ffmpegthumbnailer also is able to generate thumbs manually via
Code:
ffmpegthumbnailer -i input.avi -o output.png

I tried to remove Thunar config folder, as suggested in several forums, and also tried to recompile relevant packages with USE flags. Unfortunately there are still no video thumbs.

qlist -IRv tumbler ffmpegthumbnailer thunar
Code:

media-video/ffmpegthumbnailer-2.2.0::gentoo
xfce-base/thunar-1.6.10-r1::gentoo
xfce-extra/tumbler-0.1.31-r1::gentoo

equery uses

Code:

[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]
[        : I - package is installed with flag     ]
[ Colors : set, unset                             ]
 * Found these USE flags for xfce-base/thunar-1.6.10-r1:
 U I
 + + dbus               : Enable dbus support for anything that needs it (gpsd, gnomemeeting, etc)
 - - debug              : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see
                          https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces
 - - exif               : Add support for reading EXIF headers from JPEG and TIFF images
 - - libnotify          : Enable desktop notification support
 + + pcre               : Add support for Perl Compatible Regular Expressions
 - - test               : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so
                          don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore
 - - udisks             : Enable storage management support (automounting, volume monitoring, etc)
 + + xfce_plugins_trash : Build thunar-tpa (trash) plugin for panel

[ Legend : U - final flag setting for installation]

                 https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces
 + + ffmpeg    : Enable ffmpeg/libav-based audio/video codec support
 + + gstreamer : Add support for media-libs/gstreamer (Streaming media)
 + + jpeg      : Add JPEG image support
 + + odf       : Enable support for .odf thumbnailers by using gnome-extra/libgsf
 + + pdf       : Add general support for PDF (Portable Document Format), this replaces the pdflib and cpdflib flags
 + + raw       : Add support for raw image formats

 - - gnome : Add GNOME support
 + + gtk   : Add support for x11-libs/gtk+ (The GIMP Toolkit)
 + + jpeg  : Add JPEG image support
 - - libav : Prefer libav over ffmpeg whenever both are supported

OK, after digging this issue I managed to solve it. It may be useful for others, experiencing same problem.

1. There are several threads at different distros forums suggesting to install ffmpegthumbnailer, remove Thunar config directory, check user/group permission and ownership of .cache/thumnails or .thumbnailers folders (actually which folder is relevant remains unclear), kill Thunar and tumblerd process and relogin. They are not very helpful.
2. The are few forum threads suggesting to check whether ffmpegthumbnailer is compiled with necessary flags. This is distro-specific, but in gentoo case I enabled all relevant user flags.
3. Finally, what helped me fixed issue is a Red Hat bugzilla discussion which says that since version 1.22 tumbler uses gstreamer instead of ffmpegthumbnailer. So, I installed several video gst-plugins which solved the problem. May be ffmpegthumbler can be unnecessary and be deleted - I don't know.

Celebrations were unfounded. After installing rstudio which brought qt dependencies there are no video thumbs again.
It is likely that qt dependencies are to blame, because during qt packages compilation video thumbs disappeared and reappeared several times, so some qt package was affecting system thumbnailer behavior.

EDIT:

The problem can be fixed by creating new account as suggested in xfce forum, so the bug is related with user settings/account.
