Hi everybody I just installed Gentoo the other day & today I finally got my GUI installed, but I'm having troubles with Portage & I don't know why... I added a bunch of the files to the package.use file but its still not working.

https://pastebin.com/X2YmnNF6

This is what happens when I try to install stuff. How do I get around this? :/

And this is my package.use file. What must I change in order to make this stuff install?? I'm still trying to learn the basics of Portage, I need my laptop for tomorrow & I need it to work!
And what are license changes? How do I make it configure that??

Edit: I sorted out the USE changes, I remembered how that worked, I took out the other 3 packages that were causing a licensing change thing, but now I have to figure out a "keyword changes" problem

Edit 2: I've made it start installing but I had to cut out the bluez-alsa bluez-tools & qt5ct due to that licensing error thing I don't know how to solve.

kenny_w,

Stop putting things in package.use except as a last resort. You have tied yourself in knots and its confusing to portage too.

You need to sanitize your USE settings.
-static-libs should never appear in package.use. That's the global default.
Only exceptions where static-libs are required appear here.

-debug should never be in package use. Building your system with USE=debug in make.conf will render it useless until you rebuild it.

Don't mix bindist and -bindist on the same system. That's a sure way to get conflicts.

Don't do what portage suggests here.
Code:
The following keyword changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.accept_keywords" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by qt5ct (argument)
=x11-misc/qt5ct-0.33 **
# required by bluez-tools (argument)
=net-wireless/bluez-tools-0_p20161212 ~x86
# required by bluez-alsa (argument)
=media-sound/bluez-alsa-1.2.0 ~x86

The versioned keywords, with the =, will lock the versions and you will never see updates. That stores up problems for the future.

I don't have debug in the USE= in make.conf though... I mean, its in the package.use thing, but that's just because it was coming up next to the packages in the list...

Can I wipe the package.use file out? Are there things I need to keep? I thought I was starting to understand how portage works but seems I've screwed up I guess...

Like, after I install stuff, I can wipe out the package.use file?

If you do that, at a minimum your use flag settings are lost on any subsequent rebuild or update of said packages, but most likely, you are running into horrible dependency issues.

kenny_w,

Rename the package.use file so it will be ignored.

Run
Code:
emerge -pve @world
This will show what has been changed without actually doing anything.
All the USE flags marked with an * have been changed.

For each flag marked with an * consider if you want it set/unset globally or set/unset on one or two packages.
Make the majority setting in make.conf and put the exceptions, if any, in a new package.use.
Use the hierarchy to your advantage. It will make maintenance easier later.
Add comments to package.use too, you are going to be reading it in 6 months or a year and wondering why you set it like that.

package.use is for exceptions to the global setup. If the same USE flag appears 4 or 5 times, maybe it should really be in make.conf?

Okay well.... could somebody please show me the right way to go about doing this stuff??? And how do I get updates with things like qt5ct??? How do I make this stuff work??? I need my laptop for tomorrow but it looks like its not going to be working for me...

I'm at 29/89 installing things right now, I'll let that finish then I'll run that command & alter the package.use thing, thanks Neddy.

It looks to me like Neddy did show you the right way to do this. Do you need additional clarification on his instructions?

What problem do you have updating qt5ct through Portage?

Oh well they said that it wouldn't update if installed... I don't know, I'm kind of confused now, to be honest clarification would be really nice, thank you.

I have another important question, how can I get hcitool installed? Enable deprecated for bluez or something of that sort? How could I go about doing that?
hcitool is a tool for QTSIXA which is what I use to pair my PS3 controllers, I use a special modified version of QTSIXA that works with fake PS3 controllers. github.com/supertypo/qtsixa

There's another 40 packages left before I can try Neddy's suggestion. Unfortunately my Intel Atom N270 is quite slow :d

They said that the generated autounmask entry would not allow Portage to update in the way you might want. Take the main advice from that post and avoid using the autounmask entry. Install qt5ct as chosen by your system setting of ACCEPT_KEYWORDS, with autounmask disabled. From the output provided, I don't see why Portage wants you to install a keyword-free version. Please post your current emerge --info. It may also be interesting to see emerge --pretend --verbose \<x11-misc/qt5ct-0.33.

Alright I'll give that a try as soon as I can, thanks Hu.
Its still got another 20 packages its sorting out, I may have to postpone this for tomorrow
I've found a video on youtube that is supposed to explain me Portage, I hope I can learn how to utilize it better. Any videos you guys could recommend I'd gladly watch.

Why not read the official documentation maintained by the project? That's likely both more detailed and better maintained than external videos.

Learning portage from a video is

Read and follow the Gentoo Handbook, the man page and other wiki pages.
I have an N270 Acer One netbook too, I feel your pain but I use distcc to help out.

-- edit --

My suggestion to rationalise you USE settings may not actually have any effect on your installed software.
It will make it easier for your helpers to understand how you got to where your are and easier for you to maintain.
At the moment nobody knows how you got to where your are. We need to clearly establish that to be able to understand the issues you report.

Alright so I've got the keywords and the use figured out, but I still can't figure out the license... I don't understand, I followed the gentoo wiki but its not working :/
videos work well because then I can have someone explain to me how everything works, and I can listen to it a few times and then have it memorized, its easier than reading but I still always try to use the gentoo wikis, I have like 20 of them in my bookmarks lol

Code:

The following license changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.license" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by media-sound/bluez-alsa-1.2.0::gentoo[aac]
# required by bluez-alsa (argument)
>=media-libs/fdk-aac-0.1.5 FraunhoferFDK

I put into /etc/portage/package.license
Code:

media-libs/* fdk-aac
media-libs/fdk-aac fdk-aac

media-sound/* bluez-alsa
media-sound/bluez-alsa bluez-alsa

but neither of those seem to work.

....would this work? I'm slightly confused on this part, I thought it would be just like the use and keyword stuff.
I can cut out the -0.1.5 and >= though right?
Code:

>=media-libs/fdk-aac-0.1.5 FraunhoferFDK

kenny_w,

There is an ACCEPT_LICENSE="..." that goes in make.conf.
Much as USE, its a space separated list of licence names to accept.
man make.conf:

ACCEPT_LICENSE = [space delimited list of licenses or groups]
This variable is  used  to  mask  packages  based  on  licensing
restrictions. It may contain both license and group names, where
group names are prefixed with the '@' symbol. License groups are
defined in the license_groups file (see portage(5)).

It says a lot more too. You need to read the rest of ACCEPT_LICENSE there.

man portage:

              package.license
This will allow ACCEPT_LICENSE (see make.conf(5)) to be augmented for a single package.

                     Format:
                     - comment lines begin with # (no inline comments)
                     - one DEPEND atom per line followed by additional licenses or groups

You are not doing that.
Code:
media-libs/fdk-aac FraunhoferFDK
would be a valid entry.

Don't just blindly accept licences. Read the licence in /usr/portage/licenses/ first.
You might find that its unacceptable.

-- edit --

Your example should work but the comparison operator and version are not really required.
They would prevent you downgrading the package.
