Could it be something to do with a screwed up shared-mime-info database, by any chance? Is it worth re-installing shared-mime-info just in case?

Code:
fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ eix shared-mime-info
[I] x11-misc/shared-mime-info
     Available versions:  1.4 1.8 ~1.9 {test}
     Installed versions:  1.8(13:20:02 02/07/17)(-test)
     Homepage:            https://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/shared-mime-info
Description:         The Shared MIME-info Database specification

What does the command 'xdg-mime query filetype <file name>' return?

Code:
fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ file mydocument.docx
mydocument.docx: Microsoft Word 2007+
fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ xdg-mime query filetype mydocument.docx
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document

Code:
fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ file myspreadsheet.xlsx
myspreadsheet.xlsx: Microsoft Excel 2007+
fitzcarraldo@clevow230ss ~ $ xdg-mime query filetype myspreadsheet.xlsx
application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet

I managed to compile it with debug.

Problem is caused by gpgme and libgpg-error rebuilding both solves it. Guess is a revdep issue if anyone wants to track it down.

ktop ~ # emerge -av libgpg-error gpgme

Cheers.

I rebuilt gpgme and libgpg-error as suggested here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/638980#c9 and it solved the issue.

I confirm that rebuilding libgpg-error and gpgme has solved the problem for me. Thank you, asotirov!

Great!
Although this issue will automatically be solved when switching to 17.0 profile, since it's recommended to rebuild your whole @world anyways. But I bet there are a lot of people who don't hurry the switch.
