I originally thought this was just a problem with Discord's font rendering, but now it's become an issue with the atom editor as well. It's hard to describe the issue, but it's like this:

In the atom text editor, the side-menu, and in the Settings tab, font rendering looks fine. However, both the menus at the top and the editor window have some weird font rendering, where it looks like letters are overlaying other letters, there are weird vertical lines between letters, etc. Looking at atom's dependency graph doesn't reveal anything about what it depends on for font rendering, but I'm wondering if maybe it's something to do with GTK, or with the nvidia-driver, or some other source.

For reference:

I have the same problem with Discord, but since that's not in the portage tree, I can't check its dependencies.

Any guesses what might be going wrong here?

Do you have FreeType 2.8.1 installed?

Lots of software depended on undocumented features in FreeType that were changed in that version. Try masking it and see if that improves things.

Hot diggity, that was, indeed, the problem with both programs. Masking solved the issue.

Thanks so much! Marking [solved]
