My current desktop environment is MATE, which I can change to a lighter one.
I'd like to switch to wayland in future.
I don't need advanced features, such as multi-seat, fast-user-switch. So I think maybe it is doable.

My first test failed yesterday.
After disable CONFIG_VT, I can't boot to the display manager (sddm).

As you've already found out, removing the core of the kernel to save kilobytes of RAM tends to make those things that expect a sane environment stop working. What are you actually trying to do?

I'm really interested in the "Kiliing CONFIG_VT" thing. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTQwNTk
Recently I have some time to give it a try.

I'd like to get a picture what part of GUI is using CONFIG_VT and how they are using it through building a system with an usable GUI but without CONFIG_VT.
Another question of me is how the grub/kernel interpenetrate with the UEFI framebuffer, I think it also relates to CONFIG_VT.
