which stage to use for new installation

On a new installation I want a no-multilib gnome systemd system. question is should I start with the no-multilib stage or the systemd stage.

Probably easier to start with no-multilib and migrate to systemd. When I migrated an install to systemd, though it would be hard to do remotely, it wasn't too bad. Do the migration early on, so you can throw it away if you don't like it or it goes horribly wrong :)

I've always had a multilib system however. I don't think it should matter however.

It doesn't matter. Seriously. Either way you will set your profile and USE="" and emerge will clean out the unwanted stuff and pull in the wanted stuff.

I recommend doing an emerge -e system after you reboot the first time in any case.
