I added the following useflags in make.conf - compairing plasma profile with dantrell-gnome-3-26-extended:

Code:
colord eds elogind evo gnome gnome-keyring gnome-online-accounts gtk3 gtkstyle introspection libsecret nautilus tracker

partially deleted - as obsolete information :)

Code:
gcm-cie-widget.c.o: undefined reference to symbol 'powf@@GLIBC_2.2.5'

For gnome-extra/gnome-color-manager-3.26.0 it seems that -lm flag is missing. As workaround you can try to add this flag to LDFLAGS with package.env.

Thank you fedeliallalinea, your workaround let gnome-color-manager build successfully.

Still failing at gtk+.

For nautilus, always as workaround, try the same thing as gnome-color-manager.

fedeliallalinea, your workaround also worked for gnome-power-manager, but not for nautilus.

So for now, I am stuck with gtk+ and nautilus not building when doing an emerge world -uDNv

And gdm does not build, when doing an emerge gnome --keep-going

emerge --info '=gnome-base/gdm-3.26.1::dantrell-gnome-3-26'|wgetpaste
https://paste.pound-python.org/show/fC9Ty78TTzy7fYa4nZ6C/

emerge -pqv =gnome-base/gdm-3.26.1::dantrell-gnome-3-26
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gdm-3.26.1  USE="branding introspection ipv6 tcpd xinerama -accessibility -audit (-elogind) -fprint -plymouth (-selinux) -smartcard -systemd {-test} -wayland"

I suspect that all, or some, of this problems are related to wrong profile selection.
I noticed just now (sorry) that your profile is default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma, but correct is select a dantrell profile for gnome-3.26 (eselect profile list for see profile options).

You are right that almost all of the problems here are profile related.

The catch is that Elleni wants to combine a GNOME profile from GNOME Without Systemd with a Plasma profile from Gentoo. The issue is that it wasn't done correctly. Although, to be fair, the Wiki page I linked Elleni to wasn't as straightforward as it could have been.

Elleni wrote:

First, the bad news. Time to undo all the changes you made.

Then, the good news. I had some time so I combined the profiles. It references both profiles of interest via a a parent file and looks like this:

Code:
├── metadata
│   └── layout.conf
└── profiles
    ├── default
    │   ├── amd64
    │   │   ├── eapi
    │   │   └── fusion
    │   │       ├── eapi
    │   │       └── gnome+plasma
    │   │           ├── eapi
    │   │           ├── package.provided
    │   │           ├── package.unmask
    │   │           ├── package.use
    │   │           └── parent
    │   ├── eapi
    │   ├── package.use
    │   └── x86
    │       ├── eapi
    │       └── fusion
    │           ├── eapi
    │           └── gnome+plasma
    │               ├── eapi
    │               ├── package.provided
    │               ├── package.unmask
    │               ├── package.use
    │               └── parent
    ├── eapi
    ├── profiles.desc
    └── repo_name

Check your inbox for for the linked tarball, extract it to an appropriate location, check every file and edit as needed. Also ensure that wherever you place it is reflected in /etc/portage/repos.conf/.

Then switch, like so:

Code:
eselect profile set test:default/amd64/fusion/gnome+plasma

This profile will get clean emerge output on a recent stage 3 tarball with:

Code:
emerge --ask --update --deep --changed-use --with-bdeps=y gnome plasma-meta

The key to watch out for is that once everything is built you need to go back and comment out the lines in the profile related to circular dependencies to see if they will build afterwards. If so, great. If not, probably not a big deal.

That said, in this scenario, if you run into non-obvious build issues that can't be independently reproduced on either a GNOME profile from GNOME Without Systemd or on a Plasma profile from Gentoo, reporting it is probably pointless.

Speaking of build failures, the only one that stood out to me is GNOME Color Manager. That one, I'll be investigating a bit.

Have fun. :twisted:

Dantrell, thank you sooo much. :D

After unpacking your tarball to /usr/local/portage, and creating /etc/portage/repos.conf/local.conf

with:

Code:
[test]
priority = 100
location = /usr/local/portage
auto-sync = No

I could eselect to the new profile.

There was a minor issue on the path as the /var/lib/layman/dantrell-gnome/generic folder did not exist. I decided to do:
cd /var/lib/layman/dantrell-gnome and ln -s /var/lib/layman/dantrell-gnome/ generic in order not to change the path in
/etc/portage/make.profile/parent and where else it might be set.

Then I had to emerge consolekit -1. And also re-emerged libfm and thus libfm-extra -1 to get them to 1.25 instead of 1.24

I commented out app-misc/tracker to not have gstreamer useflag in /var/lib/layman/dantrell-gnome/profiles/targets/gnome/package.use as my system has ffmpeg in make.conf.

emerge world -uDNav --with-bdeps=y only complained about two packages to unmask, so I temporary did:

Code:
# required by dev-python/python-poppler-0.12.1-r4::gentoo
# required by app-text/pdfshuffler-0.6.0-r1::gentoo
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
=app-text/poppler-0.57.0
# required by x11-misc/pcmanfm-1.2.3::gentoo
# required by lxde-base/lxde-meta-0.5.5-r4::gentoo
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
=x11-libs/libfm-1.2.4

I fire up emerge world -uDNv --keep-going that will take a while, and afterwards will do an emerge gnome --keep-going.

I'll be back to report result and/or ask for help, if there are any troubles.

In fact I dont know, whether poppler and libfm unmask is ok, or if I could solve this differently.

Thanks again for your great and valuable support :D

Btw. I did open this separate thread, as I thought, it would not fit in your great sticky thread. If it better fits there, may I ask a mod to merge it with your support thread, but only if dantrell would like to have it that way.

Maybe just make the thread subject more obvious?

Code:
compile failures, trying to combine a gnome without systemd profile with a plasma profile

Or something?

You were supposed to edit the files that reference that path directly as needed. ;)

Same with the overlay name. It doesn't have to be "test". Feel free to call it whatever you want, just rename it in the relevant files accordingly as well.

Just one thing, any changes you make in relation to the combined profiles should be inside the combined profiles. The whole point is to consolidate your changes. Also, you shouldn't be editing parent overlays (or trees for that matter) that can sync because depending on the type of repository it is, unofficial changes can prevent it from syncing or will simply be overwritten.

Whatever changes you need to make are fine, just make them inside the combined profiles and comment on them as needed so you remember why they are there.

Yes, but I was afraid, that the folder generic is reverenced elseway too, so I thought, maybe its saver to creaate that symlink, and also keeping the name test (KISS); I will maybe play with those later on, thanks for the hints anyway! :)

ok, I see, thanks for pointing that out.

Emerge world compiled most of the needed packages .

But nautilus still fails:

Yes, but I was afraid, that the folder generic is reverenced elseway too

I'm pretty sure it is as simple as removing "/generic" from the first line of each parent file but whatever works for you.

Sync up and rebuild.

Dantrell, you are incredible :D Great job bro!

Synched and emerge nautilus and rest of world finished building correctly :)

I proceeded with emerge gnome and it finished without any problem. Finally emerged some gnome-extra-apps, flawlessly.

Final question on this topic:

Can you please explain me, how I would proceed for creating the tarball you provided me? I am asking, for future releases, to know, how I would do the upgrade to another profile and re-combine it with default plasma profile.

Best regards, and again - a huge THANK YOU for your great job! :D

Quite a bit of information is provided by:

Code:
man portage

You can also reference the relevant Gentoo Wiki and Devmanual pages.

The key part are the parent files. Each line in those files are considered to be inherited profiles.
