After solving the xmltv problem: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1069686.html

I went on to the next one, discovering that tvheadend (TVH) was not seeing the adapters I have.

But:
- dmesg says both adapters were correctly initialized, one of them dowloaded the required firmware; the other doesn't need it, accordind to the dmesg on jessie.
- The /dev/dvb/adapter0 and adapter1 are in place
- Permissions are granted to the group video, to which TVH belongs
- w_scan scans correctly boths adapters, which insures the os is performing correctly.
- And, above all, exactly the same hardware setup works perfectly with debian-jessie

There's no related messages on the log and I found nothing relevant on TVH forum. Furthermore, most of their posts are related to the debian/ubuntu world and so I don't suppose I could find help there.

So, after many wasted hours, I guess I'll have to live with jessie and systemd on this system, unless someone comes to rescue me, which would be much appreciated.

I have at the moment no access to my Gentoo System with TVH (next week I will be able to bring the system up).

Your information are not enough to pinpoint the problem.

What adapters do you have?
What does
Code:
ls -ahl /dev/dvb/adapter0
say?

I slightly remember that I did not see the adapter in the listing, but I succeeded in entering it manually.

BR
PS: If you succeed to solve problems with other Linux distributions, the only additional error which could be done with Gentoo is having the wrong USE-flag.

Right! It's working, long live Gentoo!

You just helped me from running away from Gentoo for the second time, after 15+ years!

I am so used to accept the binaries "as they come" that it didn't cross my mind that there were choices to be made! And it was right in front of my nose.

So, to cut the story short, I looked at the USE flags and amongst some suspicious settings, there was the obviously wrong (-dvb): how could TVH possibly detect the adapters? But, to my surprise, I couldn't find where the masking was ocurring because the package had it right and the config files didn't have it; perhaps you could satisfy my curiosity.

But, to test the theory, I just inserted -dvb into the profile/use.mask and built to glory.

By the way, I tested again the gentoo 9999 package but it fails while building libx26x and libvpr, I'm not sure of the file names. But v4.2.3 from ::oboevelay works perfectly, as much as a fast test can tell. At least it detects the adapters and plays some tested channels on a remote kodi, but not on the web gui, at least on a quick test.

That's all for a long day, thank you so much, keep well.

Please post the output of emerge --info --verbose list-of-relevant-packages. (This is actually generic advice applicable to almost any request for help with a problematic package.)

USE flag masking is handled through the profile. If DVB was masked for you, the maintainer of your profile likely thought it would not work. We should try to understand whether the maintainer was incorrect or whether the problem is subtle and has not yet affected you.

A.F.A.I.K dvb is always excluded by default. Either you want to activate it for all, so do it by adding "dvb" to /etc/portage/make.conf -> USE="... dvb ..." or you could even define it per package, by creating a file with "media-tv/tvheadend dvb" in /etc/portage/package.use/tvh

The second method enables only dvb for tvheadend and all dependant packages.

There is lot about Gentoo which you will come to learn. The best is to start with a system where you can play with.

BR.

Either you want to activate it for all, so do it by adding "dvb" to /etc/portage/make.conf -> USE="... dvb ..." or you could even define it per package, by creating a file with "media-tv/tvheadend dvb" in /etc/portage/package.use/tvh

That's exactly what puzzled me, I did both and the mask (-dvb) was still showing up on emerge. That's when I found out that the only way was to unmask it by inserting it in use.mask.

But you are quite right, "learn by doing", and for the time being I'm using this Raspberry pi as a guinea pig, although it is in fact my home server for tvheadend, nextcloud and general home nas with all the family movies, and it also does backups. For this it has two 3TB disks that are mirrored by rsync every night. So, it's something that I cannot fool around too much. But it's now fully working with Gentoo.

Thank you for your help,
jss

joanandk: jssilva tried to activate it, but was blocked by a profile setting. Bypassing that is a step most Gentoo users would learn much later, if ever.

jssilva: After chasing through a few levels of ARM profiles, I found where dvb is masked for you.
profiles/arch/arm/use.mask:
# No hardware to test by the team
dvb
This is relatively good news. Since it was masked due to a lack of test hardware, it is likely officially unsupported for your architecture, which is better than being masked because there are known defects. You might yet encounter problems, but this at least suggests that there are no serious known problems.

Thank you for taking the trouble and letting me know. Now I know I can safely ignore it.

The next step is migrating my main laptop to Gentoo, it's a MacBook Pro 8.2 and I'm already writing this post on it. The most difficult issue was getting the muxed graphics right (intel + readeon).

The only thing left to solve is the VirtualBox guest network adapter not working in bridge and, for what I've read on the net, this is a kernel setting and I'm comparing this config with the previous that I used on Manjaro openrc, trying to discover it.

With this friendly forum and this kind of teachers I'm sure I'll learn fast, thank you all again.
