Attack first, because this is how the Vulcans do it? I can't imagine a greater perversion of Star Trek than this.

Yeah I don't know; episode three got really confusing and surreal in how everyone behaves. Also, Enterprise at least tried to be a praequel but this might as well be set in 2700 because I'm not seeing how this is a prequel; this is not even trying to fit into the existing canon.

And Michael's personality remains too melodramatic and large-hammy.

At least they warned about giving zero shits about the canon.

They did, where?

Since JJ Star Trek has gotten into this silly "half canon" situation where they take massive liberties while claiming it still fits in.

I mean just reboot, no alternate timeline but a full reboot; there is nothing wrong with that. After a while canon gets too convoluted and Enterprise already skirted the edges. Marvel does it all the time.

I guess I misremembered it. I could have sworn I read that it wasn't going to follow the TOS timeline OR the timeline of the new movies.

But maybe not all is lost. I'll quote what might be considered a minor spoiler, but it vaguely addresses the inconsistencies.
source wrote:
Though Discovery has a distinctly different look than the original Star Trek series — the uniforms have changed as have the look of the Klingons — the writers say all the discrepancies between Discovery and the original show will be explained.

I agree that it would almost be better for a complete reboot, and then just "approximate" that Discovery would be occurring in a time that would have predated TOS, just as a point of reference.

I've only watched the first of the new movies, and if they just stuck with the timeline, I think it would've been good. They just took the worst parts of Trek (time travel) and used it so they could be lazy. Such a waste.

Just had a looksee at the third episode, it's OK - not Star Trek mind, too many breaks in continuity. Plus as mentioned before the tech seems to be at a marked disparity to TOS, unless they're going to paint this as a section 31 operation.

I bought Blazing Saddles while it is still legal to purchase in the US.

Exactly! Real fans don't need subtitles and can already speak fluent Klingon. Pox on Star Trek for catering to non-virgins.

Huh. Maybe UKIP voters aren't as much the problem as your bias against them.

Klingon subtitles have been used before, though perhaps the show is overusing them.

Can anyone explain to me why they did the whole "virus gave klingons ridges" bit? I thought it was blatantly obvious that decades had passed and so had special effects. The ruined the willing suspension of disbelief

I suppose it was Enterprise though, which is fairly unwatchable

Especially because most people on those ships aren't—they are speaking their own language with a universal translator and the audience just sees it translated or something.

My favourite part was how consistently Enterprise treated this. In other Trek they just had ear implants or whatever that served as it but Enterprise made it clear those weren't around yet. So in one episode they need Sato to translate for them who's like a Savant who can learn languages in a week and in another episode aliens on the far side of the universe just speak English.

At least in StarGate the entire universe just speaks English and no one finds this weird. Until they threw that away in StarGate universe which takes place in the same universe and Eli is legitimately surprised to encounter people who speak it but it's then explained.

Of course the entire Lucian Alliance still speaks English and no one thinks this is weird.

I watch a lot of foreign movies, so it isn't the subtitles that bother me. It's the subtitles with a bad sounding language, and I feel like the dialogue is probably too weak to pay attention.

it adds nothing. it's annoying.

No, no, you have it backwards. The virus took away the ridges and made them more human looking. And it was just some Klingons, not all.

Jeez. Get your history correct.
