Proxy maintenance for Gentoo: "Bad" versus "No" maintainer

I was a bit disheartened to see mail-client/squirrelmail to get lastrited due to a security bug, but I really would like to know more about proxy maintenance. There seems to be a lot of fear out there of doing this but I wonder, what is a "shitty" [ proxy ] maintainer.

There are clearly some quality standards that need to be met when making ebuilds. Assume those are at least met. However suppose it's a bit slow, maybe a week or so before bugs get addressed. Or perhaps write a patch that involves hackish code that "works" to solve the issue but perhaps unacceptable to upstream. Is it mandatory for bug uncovering be proactive vs reactive? Can a "shitty" proxy maintainer be a reactive maintainer? Is this worse than having no maintainer? What about testing for each architecture that one doesn't have access to?

I suppose squirrelmail might end up getting emerge --depcleaned on my machine but perhaps a hacked ebuild in a local portage tree with the latest code might still keep it alive on my box for a little while longer. I don't know for how long as though I have it installed, I don't use http mail much. it's more of a curiosity than anything else...

Quality standards are set by whoever commits your code.
They take the blame ... you get the credit.

Can bug fixes be proactive?

Yes, well I didn't mean actually looking for the exact line in the code that might be problematic, but rather searching or monitoring bug sites that aren't specifically addressed to you (proactive bug hunt), versus being pinged whenever someone else finds a bug and reports it directly to you (reactive).

The former is extremely costly in terms of time involvement. The latter is a bit easier I'd say...

I'm fairly sure that Gentoo has a mix of proactive and reactive devs, never mind proxy maintainers.
