EDIT: I started out misreading "enlightenment-1.0.17" as a build of E17, not E16. "The one that's shown as production right now" is where I was headed, but I'd be happy to switch to one of the other versions if that's advised.[/EDIT]

I really like enlightenment, ever since it was a new (and very different...) project. Every so often I try to make it my desktop, and something always goes wrong enough that I give up and come back Some Other Time.

Right now I have: x11-wm/enlightenment-1.0.17 freshly built today:
Code:
 * Found these USE flags for x11-wm/enlightenment-1.0.17:
 U I
+ + dbus       : Enable dbus support for anything that needs it (gpsd,
                  gnomemeeting, etc)
 - - doc        : Add extra documentation (API, Javadoc, etc). It is
recommended to enable per package instead of globally
 - - nls        : Add Native Language Support (using gettext - GNU locale
                  utilities)
+ + pango      : Enable pango font rendering
 - - pulseaudio : Add support for PulseAudio sound server
 - - xcomposite : Enable support for the Xorg composite extension
+ + xinerama   : Add support for the xinerama X11 extension, which is
mandatory if you work in multiple monitors setup
 - - xrandr     : Enable support for the X xrandr extension

I run it on a Gentoo box that I access over VPN.

It works fine except that some, not all, of the text graphics render ugly. I've seen things like this before, when an app isn't being mapped to font libraries it needs, and my hunch is that's what's happening here, but I haven't been able to find where the problem is, or where the settings are.

"man" pages come up fine, but if I go up and down too much, pretty soon they start to render all wrong, until I have to start over. Like I've got my terminal's TERM set to something primitive. I've tried several options -- "xterm", "vt100" -- but I don't see any differences.

Maybe a clue: other things in the online menus seem a bit short. There's nothing under "GNOME", which is fine with me, but makes me wonder if I've left out other code that's assumed available. Also missing is anything under "Enlightenment Epplets", or "User Menus" -> "Other" -> "Core". Some other places too but you get the gist, it all makes me wonder if I'm leaving out something assumed.

"Help" would probably pull up a browser, but there isn't one on this machine yet, so it doesn't respond at all. (Hints for something lightweight welcome, but that's a different issue.)

"emerge --info" coming next.

I'm drawing a blank on good free pages to post graphics, or I'd show you a picture of what I mean. Most of the ones I can think of right now are text-only, so hints/reminders there are welcome.

Okay, here's a link to my own silly thing, please be kind, O World...
What I mean by lousy text graphics
Hints are begged for. Thanks.

You installed e16. If you want e17 then ask for x11-wm/enlightenment:0.17 instead.

Okay, well... What I meant to install was "whatever's being flagged production for Enlightenment right now."

I got:
Code:
 % emerge -s enlightenment
[ Results for search key : enlightenment ]
Searching...

*  x11-wm/enlightenment
      Latest version available: 1.0.17
      Latest version installed: 1.0.17
      Size of files: 2361 KiB
      Homepage:      https://www.enlightenment.org/
      Description:   Enlightenment Window Manager (e16)
      License:       BSD

I did notice (for instance):
Code:
/usr/share/e16

...but it wouldn't be the first time a version number was hazy from build to build on a piece of software, so I didn't think too much about that.

If E20 (or, E17, or E21) would be better to use, I can flag whichever under 'package.accept_keywords'; but so far I've just been following what emerge gave me.

I know there's been a lot of change between those versions, but I haven't tried any of them recently enough to have a preference, at least not lately. Happy to if I should. Thanks.

...and, only now do I realize:
Code:
      Latest version available: 1.0.17

...points to:
Code:

      Description:   Enlightenment Window Manager (e16)

Oops. Bad oversight. Sorry about that.

Gist is still the same but I guess I should change the title here.
