So, i3 isn't loading .Xresources when I
Code:
startx
and when I
Code:
xtdb -merge .Xresources
i3 just hangs and nothing can be done except killing it through htop.

I tried changing .Xresources to .Xdefaults and it allows to to display colours only adding in any other options like removing scrollbar or fonts crashes i3 when I open urvxt via
Code:
mod4 + enter

I'm kinda confused about what's going on, so I've liked the config for both but there doesn't seem to be anything exotic in there

i3 config

currently .Xdefaults

Does https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_resources as mentioned in the X resources wiki article help?

Wiki: If you are using .xinitrc, it is possible .Xresources will not be read. To fix this, add the following to .xinitrc

Code:
 -f ~/.Xresources  && xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Rxvt-unicode#.xinitrc

what happens with an
Code:
xrdb .Xresources
?

You can try to rename .Xdefaults or .Xrecourses and then create a new one with
Code:
touch ~/.Xdefaults
.
Then in the new Xdefaults set
Code:
urxvt * termName: rxvt-unicode-256color
USE-Flag=256-Color

and in your .bashrc an
Code:
export TERM = 'rxvt-unicode-256color'

I've no problem with the colours being read, the rest of the file isn't being read though. For example it isn't loading the font, which is installed in /use/share/fonts.

My .xinitrc is currently
Code:
xrdb -load ~/.Xresources &
exec i3

as no other way loads .Xresources at all.

I have confirmed this exact file work on urxvt on a different laptop.

Ok problem solved. i3 was loading xterm instead of urxvt as it's default terminal, that's why nothing was loading and it was acting strange I guess. After changing urxvt to be the default editor everything worked as expected.
