You have a very old portage.
First try to update portage with
Code:
# emerge --oneshot portage

Thanks for the prompt response. I did emerge-webrsync to Sync the Gentoo ebuild repository to the latest one . Please correct me - is portage not a combination of ebuild of different softwares ? So if I upgrade my ebuilds, do I still need to update the portage ? Will the portage upgrade helpful in resolving this error which I see ?

Appreciate all your help.

manu_leo,

Portage is the Gentoo package manager. Its a program written in Python.
The Gentoo repository, incorrectly referred to as the portage tree, is all the descriptions the package manager needs to build various packages, including itself.

emerge-webrsync updates the repository, it does not install any software.

Update portage as fedeliallalinea describes.

Then read and act on all of your unread news items. They are important. Ignoring them can break your Gentoo.
