Sadly, this issue may probably not be solved in the effect of using gcj (gcc java). This is more of gcj is being removed from gcc-7+. So this means, if you are are depending on gcj, you will need to switch to icedtea or oracle-java sooner or later.

Quote:
As of GCC 7, the GCC Java frontend and associated libjava runtime library have been removed from GCC. The information on this page is kept here for reference but only applies to GCC 6 and earlier.

Thank you for replies! So what are my options? I can't update my system because of dev-java/icedtea-3.4.0:8 update to 7.2.6.11:7 gives this error...

That's downgrade to different slot.
dev-java/icedtea-3.4.0:8 should update to dev-java/icedtea-3.5.1:8 (works without ecj-gcj)

And you should have:
$ eselect java-vm show:
Current system-vm
  icedtea-8
Current user-vm
  icedtea-8

Thank you for reply. I did:
Code:
emerge =dev-java/icedtea-3.5.1:8

Code:
$ eselect java-vm show
Current system-vm
  icedtea-8
Current user-vm
  (unset)

But with
Code:
emerge -avuND @world
...
[ebuild  NS    ] dev-java/icedtea-7.2.6.11:7::gentoo [3.5.1:8::gentoo]
...

Code:

equery depends dev-java/icedtea-7.2.6.11
 * These packages depend on dev-java/icedtea-7.2.6.11:
dev-java/icedtea-3.5.1 (dev-java/icedtea:8)
                       (dev-java/icedtea:7)
virtual/jdk-1.8.0-r3 (dev-java/icedtea:8)

So the problem remains..

Try
Code:
# emerge --ask --verbose --depclean dev-java/icedtea:7

And, in case something tries pulling it in, have it in package.mask in order to see what is pulling it.
/etc/portage/package.mask:
dev-java/icedtea:7

With

/etc/portage/package.mask:
Code:
dev-java/icedtea:7

the world update finally proceeds wthout icedtea-7.2.6.11 pulled in anymore and without any message.
Should I leave this setting permanently?

Thank you!

If no longer needed, the file could be deleted. I haven't had package.mask for several years now.
