I have an existing system that was running core 2. I did manage to boot from an install usb and re-emerged the entire world (1700 packages). The thing still won't boot. The kernel on the USB is the exact same rev as the one installed on my system (4.14.83). It boots up fine on the USB and runs well once I chroot in. Example: was able to emerge the entire world.

When booting, the last thing I see is "Starting mysql". I can ping it, but I can't seem to access any network related services (ssh, others).

Can anyone think of something that I just need to reconfigure that will get me booting again, or do I just need to...

Well, I almost got done typing this, but mysql apparently timed out and the system somewhat finished booting up. I was able to ssh in. Perhaps things will work better if I re-emerge from the bootup of the real system rather than from the install system?

Do you have some kind of optimization specific to the Intel procesor? For example in your make.conf CFLAGS="-march=..."
When you change the processor, you need to recompile your kernel and all the packages for the new CPU architecture. First start from a USB live CD and chroot, then recompile the kernel and all packages, then you can boot into Gentoo with your AMD.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I did all of that. Unfortunately, I ran into one problem at the same time that another problem showed up. sddm doesn't like the latest upgrades on any of my computers (all two of them). I had to install gdm on both to get their gui's running. It's hard to solve one problem when another is in the way.

I found the wiki page for the Ryzen processor. That helped. I was running an old kernel version so things will probably work better now that I've upgraded to a current one using the "experimental" USE flag.

Things are working pretty well now, though there are still some strange things going on. Why does a command work when run from one folder but not from the home folder? I mean, the program opens, but can't connect to the intended server (boincmgr). When I type in the command from /home it works. When I type it from /home/user it doesn't. So, my gui buttons can't get me there. I have to open a terminal and change directory. Why would the starting directory affect the connectivity? At least I know how to get there even if I can't "get there from here" (1st time that saying has made sense to me).

I have been using MATE since switching to gdm. I wonder if some of my problems will go away if I switch back to Plasma. Maybe Plasma has some things locked up somehow.

trigggl,

Edit /etc/rc.conf and uncomment #rc_interactive="YES".

Reboot and press the I key early in boot. - Don't wait for the message.
Now you will be prompted as each service is started. skip mysql, get to the login screen and poke about.

mysql may not be the problem, so it may take several goes.

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

I got tired of fighting with mysql and I don't seem to need it. I pulled it out of the runlevel and everything else daemon related seems to be working fine. I'll keep this advice in mind for the future, though. I probably do need to look into it at some point.

My boinc problem seems to have something to do with how my home folder is set up. It was trying to use my /home/user folder for the program rather than the boinc folder /var/lib/boinc. boincmgr seems to work everywhere but /home/user (even /home/user/folder).

I guess I can mark this thread as solved (though the mysql thing didn't get fixed).

Logged into Plasma and boincmgr works like it's supposed to.
