I have an eBook I converted to an audio. Currently its in
mp3 format, but I want to convert it to a standard music CD format.
This eBook is actually a monograph I want to give away to people,
who who are limited to a CD Player and unfamiliar with mp3s and such.
The original pdf is foreign to them as well.
The entire length is 108 minutes so it is longer than the 80 minutes available.
As it is not music I wonder if the file can be tweeked to fit. I converted with
Audacity, but I'm a novice so I'm unsure if this may be done or how.
It would be helpful if it would fit on just one disk.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

TIA.

I would look into speeding up the audio, and then perhaps lowering the tone to compensate. It will sound like the narrator is talking really fast. Another option is to cut portions of it out.

++

So far as I know these are your only options to try and make a single audio CD out of 108 minutes of audio. Some voice mail systems cut out the pauses in speech. I find it VERY hard to listen to personally, but a similar method might be used to trim out unneeded audio-time.

I've found that I cannot burn audio files that are 80 minutes long. Something around 79:45 will burn.

In Audacity, menu bar: Effect -> Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift

In the box:
Code:
Initial Tempo Change (%): 40
Final Tempo Change (%): 40

Don't alter the pitch sliders (unless you want to, of course). Press 'OK'. And prepare for a long wait. When done, it should be sped up so the duration is now 77 minutes, 8.5 seconds.

There are also Change Pitch, Change Speed, and Change Tempo menu entries under Effects, that work faster. But last I checked, I did not find the quality of those algorithms to be acceptable.

If there are a lot of pauses in the reading you might want to try Truncate Silence first. Play with the settings to find a comfortable amount. See how long it ends up at, then use Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift for a finisher to get it within the limit.

Also, make sure the sample-rate is 44100. Change it at the bottom left (Project Rate) if necessary. Then File -> Export Audio.

One of those computers on a board, with audio (like this add-on: audio board) plus flash storage. You can distribute as long of a story as you want - all for under $50 US a pop.

Okay, not quite CD prices. Is there a way to get it down?

How about this MP3-Player

$2 US for 32 GB, plus it plays MP3?

There is another point that I just realized. I did not set Audacity to mono, but rather left it as Stereo.
Would reducing to Mono help? Apologies for the question as this is new.

TIA

The Redbook CDDA specification allows for two modes: Stereo 2 44.1 kHz, and quadraphonic at 22.05 kHz. There are no provisions for mono, and even if there were, it would just double the sample rate to 88.2 kHz. This allows for the motor that spins the disc to operate at a single speed no matter the channel configuration.

In other words, declining from Red Book standard will produce a disk not playable in standard players. Although I think this 80 minutes can be stretched to 85 or so and some players still can play it.

Put the first half of the recording on one of the two stereo tracks, and the second half on the second stereo track. Instruct the listener to unplug either the right of left speaker (or pull out the right or left earphone) at the appropriate times.

Jeez, do I have to think of everything?

That's not a bad idea.
