Lumina presently is a monolithic all-in-one package with several desktop applications that not everyone needs or wants. Upstream explains they are not going to split anytime soon.

What should be the solution for Gentoo?
  • Create ebuilds for each "desktop application", all using the same distfiles tarball
  • Put more USE flags on x11-wm/lumina, one for each "desktop application"

I think that with separated ebuilds is better, at least I can install the applications also in another DE/WM.
You can also create a meta package for Lumina applications (like kdeapps).

x11-wm/lumina already is kind of meta package if the desktop-utils USE flag is set.

Ok, but my idea was to separate what's WM and apps, furthermore I don't like "exotic" use flags but this is only my opinion

I fully agree. And that's the reason for this topic. Maybe the single ebuilds should go into special categories?
What I think of is like:So the new meta could reside in lumina-core

For consistency with others DE I'd change lumina-core in lumina-base (now in portage gnome-base, gnustep-base, lxde-base,...).
The core-utils I'd put in lumina-apps as single ebuild, and for this a use flag on base package I'd understand .

It is strongly-encouraged that the "core-utils" of Lumina are built and distributed as a single package.

Always in my opinion.
