PostPosted: Tue Aug 15, 2017 12:22 am    Post subject: [solved] K3B does not "see" CDs and DVDs Reply with quote

Upon starting K3B I get a dialogue box saying

Quote:

No CD/DVD/BD writer found.
K3b did not find an optical writing device in your system. Thus, you will not be able to burn CDs or DVDs. However, you can still use other K3b features such as audio track extraction, audio transcoding or ISO 9660 image creation.

I get the same message if I run K3B as root.

If I look in the K3B configuration it show my 2 DVD drives, but continues to show a message saying they don't exist.

When starting K3B from the command line I get this output:

Code:

i see quite a bit of invalid and error in there, but don't know how to interpret it all.

At this moment both devices have a disk in them. A CD in one, a video DVD in the other.

I did this to see what would happen and it seems to have worked.

Code:

Why might K3B not be seeing the disks?

What additional information can I provide? Where else should I be looking?

I believe what you want to test is actually the opposite, if you are trying to see if your CD and DVD have writing capability, then the output for dd file needs to be like this:

Try this instead
Quote:
$ dd if=/temp/folder/test/file/here of=/dev/sr0

That will hopefully confirm whether or not your drive can write, then repeat with the other one. Do you get what dd does, it just makes a bit for bit copy, so you will need to find some file to put in there for the if= portion, which is the input file. Make sure to run the command twice, once with each disk drive so you can verify whether or not the hardware feature is there for each independently /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1

Please downgrade to -r1 and try again.

Hello and thank you.

LIsLinuxIsSogood - I see your point. After posting this message I did in fact burn the ISO image I created with dd to a DVD and test it. Thus I can confirm that /dev/sr0 does write disks. Have not tested /dev/sr1 since the problem started but I will do soon as I can.

asturm - I will downgrade to -r1 and report back.

And here is that report....

Seems to have fixed it. I don't have time to test actual reading and burning, but the command line output looks better, and no message about no devices being available appears.
