Hello folks,

I am fairly new to Gentoo, I have been using Funtoo for the past 2 months, however I am still working my way out to grasp the basics.

I have this fresh installed Gentoo Stable on a ThinkPad X230 which uses a intel HD4000 video card. Apparently I am using KMS but GUI tears horribly.

Here is my setup:

/etc/portage/make.conf

Code:

VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965"
USE="-bindist -systemd X alsa crypt fontconfig git syslog openrc blkid cryptsetup"

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Code:

Remove most of those lines and try with only modesetting instead. Unfortunately, Intel drivers are in a very bad state.

Yeah, the modesetting DDX is way better.

Even without those settings and with just modsetting it really makes no difference. Tear is really bad. Is there a way to use just standard xorg driver without KMS. That was my setup with funtoo and I had no problems.

Fix that, you're using software rendering.

Awesome thank you, I think it is so much better now. I removed the garbage I had in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf and added /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-modesetting.conf as suggested in the guide.

As result, this is how /var/log/Xorg.0.log looks like now:

Is there anything else I could try and improve as far as video is concerned? Thanks

You can take that line out of the config if you want - I think all drivers nowadays use DRI 3 anyway (even if it shows a bunch of DRI 2 in the logs).

No other problems there, looks like you should have working hardware video decoding too. Not all players enable it by default though, so watch out for that.
