According to the KDE wiki "kde" should be put into the make.conf. There is also the profile "plasma". Does it make sense to work with both at the same time or should the kde use flag be removed from the make.conf?

Thanks
Lokesh

Thanks very much. This allows me to clean up my make.conf. Duplicates seem not to matter, though.

Cheers

Duplicates don't matter, however, in addition to the make.defaults with USE=kde, Plasma profile also does some conflict removal where it sets -kde and -qt4 on select packages in package.use. And those would be overridden by your make.conf setup if switched on.

I did not find that. Could you enlighten us?

No  . I can't remember where I saw it, and a quick search did not bring it up. I have to leave now, but get back tomorrow.

My guess is you remembered that from a very low-level example about USE flags in the Gentoo handbook.

 So embarrasing: not even can I find it anywhere, it is actually the reversed. The KDE/Plasma5 upgrade wiki clearly states that the kde use flag may cause conflicts if put into the make.conf. Apologies!
