When kde plasma starts my session starts but plasmashell crashes (even as a new user).

But I see a back background with a fancy cursor, and Alt-F2 opens the launcher and things run fine.

I just don't have a desktop lower panel, background, etc.

I opened a Konsole, and ran plasmashell, capturing the following error:

I hate to answer without the experience exactly with solving this issue but if it is the same as this link here https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=309&t=150956. You might need to make Change to the discoverable or notification settings of KDE. I know that is vague, but if that helps you to figure it out maybe or someone else can chime in :-). Once you make changes it could make sense to reinstall the package for plasma.

The link only suggests to run with gdb with correct flags:
Code:
gdb /usr/bin/plasmashell

The output does not give me a clear answer, and there is no solution.

I am also using plasma 5.11 (5.12 is not stable)

The link below shows output from running:
Code:
gdb /usr/bin/plasmashell

https://pastebin.com/TvZFVgWu

File ends in:
Code:

Thread 1 "plasmashell" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00007fffcd6383dd in ?? () from /usr/lib64/dri/nouveau_dri.so

That is progress. Now you need to collect a backtrace for the crash, so that you can see how it reached the specific faulting instruction. Rebuild nouveau_dri and plasmashell with debugging symbols. Crash it again in gdb, run bt to get a backtrace, and pastebin the result. You may need to rebuild other packages with debug symbols too, but start with just these two.

I rebuilt the kernel, stepping up default debug level from 3 to 5.
'Device Drivers' -> Graphics support -> Nouveau (NVIDIA) cards ->
Maximum debug level: 5
Default debug level :3 <- Changed to 5

How do I rebuild necessary packages with debug symbols?

Since we are talking plasmashell, I think that would include all plasma, kde5, and qt5 packages.
Code:

echo '# DEBUG nouveau plasmashell' >> /etc/portage/package.use
eix qt -I |grep '\[I\]' | sed 's|\[I\] \(.*\)|\1 debug|g' >> /etc/portage/package.use
eix kde -I |grep '\[I\]' | sed 's|\[I\] \(.*\)|\1 debug|g' >>  /etc/portage/package.use
eix plasma -I |grep '\[I\]' | sed 's|\[I\] \(.*\)|\1 debug|g' >>  /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -uatvDN @world
revdep-rebuild --library 'libstdc++.so.6' -- --exclude gcc -ta

This will take all day to build.
I will post more once complete.

oom killer stopped qtwebengine from building for a while.
This was an old system so I also ran:
revdep-rebuild --library 'libstdc++.so.6' -- --exclude gcc -ta
Now the system comes up with out crashing, and debug flags enabled.
I will collect and post system info tonight.

I guess Next I need to rebuild with debug logs off.

With the nouveau driver and debug symbols, everything booted, but it was just too slow, even with most plasma features turned off.

I rebuilt the system without debug symbols and the performance is still unusable.

I switched back to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers:304.137, using an old working xorg.conf, and the speed is faster.

The performance is not as good as profile 13.0.

The system becomes unusable with Plasma System Settings->Hardware->Displays->Composer->Rendering Backend->Opengl*
This must be set to XRander to make the desktop usable.
