I am trying for three days now to setup my vlc without success... Emerge (compilation and installation phases) is concluded without any errors, for various sets of the local USE flags that I have tried, usually following suggestions found on related posts in the web, but everytime vlc segfaults on startup:

Code:
vinicius@mossadegh ~ $ vlc myvideo.mp4
VLC media player 2.2.6 Umbrella (revision 2.2.6-0-g1aae78981c)
[0000001690705ea8] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without inte
[00000016907b03b8] qt4 interface error: Unable to load extensions module
Killed

The error may changes if I change the local USE flags, but there is always segfault. Here is a more detailed overview:

vinicius@mossadegh ~ $ vlc  --verbose=2 --verbose-objects=all myvideo.mp4

As I said I have tried many local USE flag combinations, including no flags at all as well as the general combination suggested in the gentoo documentation:

Code:
FILE /etc/portage/package.use
media-video/vlc gnutls live lua matroska rtsp theora upnp vcdx

Thank you all!

Works for me (sorry), my profile is way different, (default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/gnome/systemd).

Hopefully these things I noticed may help you somehow:

I see this in my output (same as yours) and mine does not crash:
Code:
qt4 interface error: Unable to load extensions module

Also, when I run with the verbose debug, I see similar output as yours regarding pulse audio and mine does not crash.

My 'emerge --info' is similar to yours except for the profile (which makes my USE flags different in general) and kernel.

Some more tidbits from my 'emerge --info vlc':
Code:

media-video/vlc-2.2.6::gentoo was built with the following:

Thank you russK very much for your reply!

I solved it! Just dont know exactly how... First I noticed some xorg errors when I logout from Xmonad, specially one mentioning lack of a mesa module or something and another regarding a video driver. So first I checked with lspci -k my drivers, and than I realized that besides a radeon dedicated graphic card I also had a VGA intel one. I didnt remembered it before because this is an old computer, with five years now, so I did not remembered that "detail". So the first thing was to add "intel" to VIDEO_CARD in make.conf and emerge @wold updates with dependencies. After that I google about the xorg error regarding mesa and ended up in the Gentoo Documentation page for the X Server configuration, which advised the four steps: 1) set USE="X" in make.conf 2) emerge mesa 3) emerge xorg-drivers 4) emerge xorg-server. Then I remembered that just after my minimal install I have tried to add the USE="X" flag but at that point I just got a lot of errors and just gave up. So now I retried, adding USE="X", emerge @wold updates with dependencies and rebooting. After that VLC started to work!

So, one of two things, or a combination of them, was the culprit: either the gentoo install was not properly setup to work with my intel video driver (which I wasn't even remembering that my computer had in first place) or the xorg was not properly set along the whole installation. I would say the intel thing seems the most reasonable cause, and probably I failed to compile the USE="X" flag just before the minimal install also for this reason.

Glad you solved it. Since your profile is not a desktop profile you may want to add X to your USE in make.conf unless you are headless.

Regards
