Hello there,

I've got a new Samsung 28" (UE590 / U28E590) screen, but I can't get a higher resolution than 1920x1080 :(
My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad W540 with Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4910MQ CPU which is capable of (according to https://ark.intel.com/products/78939/Intel-Core-i7-4910MQ-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz):

The screen has HDMI and displayport input. My laptop has VGA and thunderbolt.
I currently do not have a mini-DP to DP cable, so I'm connecting it through a mini-dp to HDMI adapter to end up with the following connection scheme: Laptop's thunderbolt -> mini-DP to HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable -> Samsung screen.
Without any additional operation, the screen gets detected and works fine at 1920x1080@60Hz.

I tried multiple things to get 3840x2160, either at 60Hz or 30Hz, but it never succeeded:

  • The: cvt + xrandr --newmode ... + xrandr --addmode ... + xrandr --output ... combo.
  • Trying to specify a custom edid with drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware= as well as in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-nvidia.conf.
  • Flashing my BIOS with an up to date version (2.31 released on 2017-05-15).
  • Upgrading sys-kernel/linux-firmware to 20170622.

As you can see in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-nvidia.conf it contains a few trials (edid stuff, ModeValidation, Modes, ...) at solving the issue:

None of my trials succeeded, but I don't know the root reason.

Should I buy a mini-DP to DP cable? Should I look into the EDID?

When trying to set the mode, I receive:

Make friends with wgetpaste. Forums posts are limited to 64k, so your log was truncated.

Not all HDMIs are equal. There are various versions.
I suspect that your HDMI link is the bottleneck.

Hi NeddySeagoon,

I just realized it was truncated, I edited and removed some unrelevant parts. Will use wgetpaste, I didn't know the tool, thanks!
Regarding the HDMI, I'm using the cable provided by Samsung that comes with the screen, so I guess that should not be the issue.

I just tested on a old gentoo laptop that has direct HDMI output and got the exact same result, unfortunately.

Thanks to https://fluxcoil.net/snippets/linux_4k_output, using this mode worked for me:

The information that appears in the Xorg.0.log file:

seems to limit me to a Mode that is < 300Mhz. With the line above, I managed to have one with 299.92 Mhz.

Now... where does that 300000KHz limit comes from and is there a way to increase it?
