After much googling, people with similar issues seem to be in completely different situations.

I had X and i3wm installed on Gentoo with kernel 4.9.16 and everything was working fine. I am running 2 1080p monitors off of an nvidia gt 310. After upgrading to kernel 4.12-rc7, there is only output to one monitor and the output is at a low 640x480 resolution.

Running xrandr simply outputs -

Code:

xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 640 x 480, maximum 640 x 480
default connected 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm

I would expect this to be an issue caused by a kernel module having to be rebuilt. I ran "emerge --ask @module-rebuild" and "emerge x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau" but the issue still persists. And still i can boot into kernel 4.9.16 and everything will be fine.

Stryder0,

Put your /var/log/Xorg.0.log onto a pastebin site so we can see why you get this resolution.
wgetpaste is your friend.

Stryder0,

Code:
[    26.742] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:04:00.0: -19
[    26.742] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

Your kernel is missing DRM support. Is the nouveau kernel module built?
The kernel setup you need is detailed in the nouveau wiki page.

As nouveau could not run, Xorg fell back to
Code:
(--) FBDEV(0): Virtual size is 640x480 (pitch 640)

Thank you, that seemed to work. I followed the wiki on installing nouveau and I had to rebuild the kernel with nvidia card support. Now, both screens are working and at full resolution.
