- app-emulation/vmware-tools-9.9.4.3206955::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Thomas Deutschmann <whissi@gentoo.org> (17 Jun 2017)
# Unmaintained in Gentoo repository; Multiple vulnerabilities
# People using VMware in Gentoo should switch to Gentoo's VMware overlay
# Bugs 619398, 621910, 616958, 536364, 614666, 612804 ...

should i do something? thanks for any help.

Read here.
Practically you need to add the vmware overlay (with layman) because there are not official gentoo developers for maintaining those package in portage tree

Thanks for the reply,
I only have vmware-tools installed, why would i need other vmware software to get installed if I do not use them?
I created the package.unmask folder in /etc/portage and added a file with this:
Code:
=app-emulation/vmware-tools-9.9.4.3206955::vmware

but it made no difference.
i also tried changing
Code:
app-emulation/vmware-tools

to
Code:
=app-emulation/vmware-tools-9.9.4.3206955::gentoo

but it gives an error that there is no such atom
in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask
what am i doing wrong?

If you want unmask vmware-tools you need to add it in package.unmask and package.accept_keywords
Code:
# echo "app-emulation/vmware-tools::vmware" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
# echo "app-emulation/vmware-tools::vmware" >> /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords
