Hi,

My system is Gentoo 64 bit, with systemd, KDE 5 and sddm. Everything use to work well, until a disk crash happened recently. After fsck, a lot of fixes had been applied, and I found I cannot enter graphic interface.

The system boots normally without any error, then the screen turns black, and no keyboard response at all, not even the caps lock key will switch on the light. I entered into recovery mode and disabled sddm. Now I can start and log in to the terminal like normal, but I still got full system freeze when trying to start sddm, or just directly use "startx" command.

I suspect that my disk crash had damaged some binary files. But there's error log or error message. I guess a full system rebuild might fix this problem, but I want to know if there's a better way to identify which file is damaged.

Thanks.

davidshen84,

Use wgetpaste to put /var/log/Xorg.0.log onto a pastebin and post the link.

What do you have in /lost+found ?
The right answer is nothing.
Files and directories here have become unlinked from your filesystem and have been found by fsck.

Neddy,

First, the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file has not been updated for a few days. I guess that X never got started since the disk crash.

There's not much in /lost+found, I think there were less than 10 files. I checked a few of them, looks like binary files, unreadable by human, so I deleted them all...

davidshen84,

Does dmesg say anything useful?
You will need to ssh in to pastebin dmesg after you lose control.
Maybe ssh in first, as you may not be able to later.

Good point Neddy. I will try that trick later on. Thanks!
