Not sure what to do here. Steam is installed in /home/shared/.steam and a symlink is placed in /etc/skel. Each user has /home/user/.steam -> /home/shared/.steam. This has worked for ages, but stopped recently. Now I get this.
Code:

~ $ steam
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/steam/bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz': No such file or directory
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
Running Steam on gentoo  64-bit
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1476379980)
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib32/libxcb-dri3.so.0: undefined symbol: xcb_send_request_with_fds

If I disable the runtime I get this.
Code:

~ $ STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/steam/bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz': No such file or directory
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
Running Steam on gentoo  64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is disabled by the user
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 710: LD_LIBRARY_PATH: unbound variable

God I hate this Ubuntu crap. Why the hell is Steam bound to that sorry distro? Sorry, just hate Ubuntu as well as software bound to a single distro instead of working on all of them.

I haven't had an xorg.conf file in years. Guess I'll try the other method when I get back to work.

No dice.
Code:

~ $ LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1 steam
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/steam/bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz': No such file or directory
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
Running Steam on gentoo  64-bit
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically
Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1476379980)
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/ubuntu12_32/steam: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib32/libxcb-dri3.so.0: undefined symbol: xcb_send_request_with_fds
~ $ LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1 STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam
cp: cannot stat '/usr/lib/steam/bootstraplinux_ubuntu12_32.tar.xz': No such file or directory
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 161: VERSION_ID: unbound variable
Running Steam on gentoo  64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is disabled by the user
/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steam.sh: line 710: LD_LIBRARY_PATH: unbound variable

I am going to try reinstalling Steam to see if it helps.

I just had the same thing. How did you solve it in the end?

Are you using FOSS drivers? It could be the usual STD++ issue.
Steam does have a good variable to use system libs when higher than steam libs
