I'm having problems with openssl preventing many, many packages, both in emerge@preserved-rebuild, @system and @world rebuilds, or individually. This is on ~amd64 OR amd64 freshly installed systems, gcc version or Cflags selection doesn't seem to matter.

I've concluded the main problem is openssl related. equery d openssl says the following, but while all these packages are ones I'm having fail, there are more. I've spent days struggling with many supposed solutions, but nothing helps.

I should mention this is on new AM4/Ryzen hardware, so maybe that's actually the main problem. I've researched and tried the known specific things for Ryzen, but nothing resolves all the openssl-python-ruby issues. I'm no expert, but I have run ~amd64 systems for 15 years now, and never seen anything remotely like this mess. I'd like to think it's the new AM4 hardware and gcc/linux not being up-to-par quite yet, but want to make sure I'm not just messing things up due to my own ignorance.

Even tried the 4.12.0-RC kernels and gcc-7.1,.0, which boot and work to the point I have up and running kde (plus xfce4, and lxde) DE systems. However, I can't get full updates/rebuilds and functionality due to the problems described. I have yet to get more than halfway through an emerge -e @system.

When a package fails to compile, it usually throws an openssl related error. I researched libressl, but that doesn't see likely as a drop in replacement for openssl anytime soon.

Is anyone seeing similar openssl-python-ruby problems on normal NON-AM4/Ryzen hardware? Any tips on resolving this, or even just understanding why this is occurring is greatly appreciated.

After still more reading on the openssl problem which seems more and more problematic, I read up some more on libressl, and was wondering if anyone had tried what's discussed here under Migration from openssl to libressl - Direction for users https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:LibreSSL The page was last updated May 17, 2017, so I's pretty current.

A brief quote:
Quote:
Migration from openssl to libressl - Direction for users

Since this is still work in progress, converting a full blown system from openssl to libressl can be quite involved. Eventually the process should be as easy as just adding USE=libressl to your make.conf file and then doing an emerge -uvNDq world. Right now, however, libressl is marked ~arch in the tree as are many packages that depend on it. Our recommendation for now is that you start with a fresh stage3 and migrate it first before building up your system. We'll guide you through that migration below. These steps should work on any stage3, for any arch or flavor. They will also give you some idea of how to proceed with a full blown system if you should want to brave it!

Download your stage3 of choice, unpack it, chroot, etc., until you have a working environment. To start with, let's make sure everything is up to date so we can isolate and identify any new emerges that are triggered due to changes we make in /etc/portage as we migrate to libressl. We'll then emerge gentoolkit for equery so we get a list of packages that depend on openssl and/or libressl:
Detailed instructions followed.

I have essentially just done what they mention- getting two fresh installs up and running to some extent, one ~amd64, and the other stable anm64. I'm now thinking it's worth a shot, seeing as my current situation is not yielding to days of work, trial and error, etc., etc.

I could sure use any opinions/advice from more advanced Gentoo experts who might know of reasons this is not currently going to work out very well.

Tried a world update, and was surprised to see libressl as the 4th of 38 packages, plus a downgrade of openssl to openssl-1.0.2l. I removed the 2 Blocks and thought maybe finally this was the big fix, but when I retried the world update libressl was gone, and emerge curiously wanted the masked openssl-1.1.0f again.

Code:
!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- dev-libs/openssl-1.1.0f::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Lars Wendler <polynomial-c@gentoo.org> (26 Aug 2016)
# Masked while being tested and reverse deps aren't fully
# compatible

Can't run emerge --depclean, emerge@preserved-rebuild, or emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world --keep-going, or --resume --skipfirst. Always quits almost immediately on ruby-2.4.1-r2, or openssl or python packages, and can't get an further, as usual. On emerge -e @system bails out as soon as it hits one of the ssl dependent packages, about halfway through. Strangely, I'm still able to somewhat run a DE even if it's a bit crippled.
Code:
gentoo-audio wrc # emerge -upDNv @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Jusr ro check, I tried an emerge libressl -pv, and got this. I'm starting to think the only solution is to try and enable llibressl on all packages possible that seem to require it as oposed to openssl, if that's even possible. On the ~amd64 system, would a global USE flag work? Seems like unless libressl was slotted it woudln't, and it would conflict with openssl. This openssl problem is becoming a show-stopper for even running a Gentoo system. I'm still wondering if it's really the AM4 hardware. :? I've normally run ~amd64 for many years, and the same mess is on the amd64 stable install, so that can't be the reason.
Code:
gentoo-audio wrc # emerge libressl -pv

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

I have two ryzen systems with openssl and no update problems at all(besides the already known rare segfaults).

Code:
emerge --info
Portage 2.3.6 (python 3.4.6-final-0, default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma, gcc-7.1.0, glibc-2.24-r1, 4.12.0-rc3 x86_64)

My impression was that libressl is not nearly complete yet. Much less on a stable system.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

After openssl-1.1.0f was masked, and openssl-1.0.2k was replaced with openssl-1.0.2l , I was able to resolve my issues. It definitely was an interesting ordeal.
(Many thanks to Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=d631ecbcf12b5b2e5ac0efcfd24c51c1d0890ec1 )

I was seriously thinking of libressl, then that new openssl version fixed me right up, but I'll definitely follow the progress of libressl.
