I have sddm setup to automatically login at boot time. About 1/3 of the time either kwin_x11 or plasmashell or both will fail to start. If I restart the failed parts manually, everything runs fine. Much more rarely, I will get a completely black screen. I usually solve that problem by opening a virtual terminal and forcing a reboot. PIA.

I'm running up to the moment stable with Intel drivers.
Portage 2.3.5 (python 2.7.12-final-0, default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/plasma/systemd, gcc-4.9.4, glibc-2.23-r3, 4.4.26-gentoo x86_64)

This has been going on at least a year. Any ideas? Perhaps an alternative more stable environment that does session management? That latter is the chief reason I don't run Gnome any more.

I have a similar setup and don't see this behavior. Perhaps it'll help if I post my sddm log:

Is your sddm launching the same things in the same order?

Looks similar, I guess. This is captured from /var/log/messages. My system does not have a /var/log/sddm.log
