Well, this is the last thing I need to have the system fully operational. About a month ago I had my gentoo stable and gcc 4.9.4. A gcc update appeared and was upgraded to 5.4. After updating and recompiling more than 300 packages some things stopped working. I found the solution to all except steam. At that time I thought of switching to the testing branch (I have also installed debian testing and it works very well) to see if that problem was solved with that great update. There I went from gcc 5.4 to 6.3 and steam still does not work.

I show the terminal log (I do not know if it's all the necessary information)

Code:
cesar@gentoo ~ $ steam

I just tried starting a fresh steam install on my amd64 multilib gentoo system that uses anyc's Steam overlay and steam works here.

Code:

Thanks for answering

I thought it was a good idea to remove my installation with all the configuration folders and reinstall and the problem persists.

Likely cause of your grief is global unmasking every testing package in portage.

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64"

I'm still looking for other clues but i can assure you that's a whole basket of troubles. I used to do that 15 years ago before portage was coded to allow unmasking single packages on demand using package.accept_keywords

At one time i had a bit of a loyal following here that did that aswell. Have to take some blame for starting an old grassroots trend

But the problem started when I still had the system with ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" in /etc/portage/make.conf and gcc went from 4.9 to 5.4. I ask, is not it a library conflict?

I cant comment about how your steam is reacting to gcc-6.x toolchain and such. it very well could be that steam runtime is abi incompatible with gcc 6

If there's any hope of steam working It might be after a complete world rebuild just to ensure everything is consistent.

I just finished my gcc 4.9 to 5.4 upgrade along with binutils... system consistency with gentoo is a hard earned reward.

If you havent checked your binutils config recently that might be part of the problems. After i started my world rebuild for the new gcc 5 abi changes i realized binutils had not been set to the new version and had to redo it all over again.

If your using gcc 6 i bet you have a new binutils version gcc 6 requires that may not have been set to active. Or maybe not but it's worth checking.

Code:
panther ~ # binutils-config -l
 [1] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-2.26.1 *

I have little hope, then  . I just updated the whole system and gcc went to 6.3 I made a sudo emerge -e -av @world --keep-going and recompiled about 1200 packages ...

Thank you very much for the help. :D

Your welcome. There still may be hope.

One thing i can say is one of the original gentoo dev's shared a phrase with me 15 years ago thats stuck with me ever since as guiding reason for all things IT related including Gentoo.

Quote:
I enabled it because it looked cool!

Sorry, I did not pay attention to this.

Code:
cesar@gentoo ~ $ binutils-config -l
 [1] x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-2.27 *

This appears on my system. It is right?

if you had two versions of binutils and the new version unselected that would be cause for concern

I don't know what causes your issue with Steam, but I can tell you that I'm using GCC 6.3 for a couple months now and Steam works just fine.

Thank you for the contribution, saboya. I'll keep looking to see if there is any solution.

This looks like an issue with libstdcxx, I had it too.

On that page I could find the solution indirectly. My error was not exactly the same as described in the wiki but I kept reading and I came up with steam using the system libraries (STEAM_RUNTIME = 0 steam). With that command steam could be started without the error of opengl and update steam completely. But now it showed me a new error (Could not load module 'vgui2_s.so'.) After that I thought to run steam without any parameters and ... now steam came back to work !!

I thank all who commented to solve the problem!
