I'm lost

first what does the U mean in the eix -s

Code:

[U] sys-apps/openrc
     Available versions:  0.21.7 0.22.4{tbz2} 0.23.2 0.24.2{tbz2} ~0.25 0.26.2 **9999 {audit debug ncurses +netifrc newnet pam prefix selinux static-libs tools unicode KERNEL="FreeBSD linux"}
     Installed versions:  0.24.2{tbz2}(20:13:06 04/20/17)(ncurses netifrc pam unicode -audit -debug -newnet -prefix -selinux -static-libs KERNEL="linux -FreeBSD")
     Homepage:            https://github.com/openrc/openrc/
     Description:         OpenRC manages the services, startup and shutdown of a host

emerge -auvDN sys-apps/openrc|wgetpaste

I guess the above command was insufficient it didn't get all of it...the wgetpaste that is

Code:

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

net-libs/gnutls:0

  (net-libs/gnutls-3.5.12:0/30::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    (no parents that aren't satisfied by other packages in this slot)

  (net-libs/gnutls-3.3.26:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=net-libs/gnutls-3:0/0= required by (net-nntp/pan-0.141:0/0::gentoo, installed)
                       ^^^^^
    (and 1 more with the same problem)

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously.  If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously. You may want to try a larger value of
the --backtrack option, such as --backtrack=30, in order to see if
that will solve this conflict automatically.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:

I've tried lots of stuff but I'm still fairly new to Gentoo pls help

Oh almost forgot I have gentoo on zfs... I hope that's not causing anything but thought it was worth mentioning

Thanks for any help you can provide

I must have blown something because I've been using this system find for a while but now I can't install/update anything

You installed eudev for some reason:

Code:

(sys-fs/eudev-3.1.5:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=sys-fs/eudev-1.3:0/0[abi_x86_32(-)?,abi_x86_64(-)?,abi_x86_x32(-)?,abi_mips_n32(-)?,abi_mips_n64(-)?,

Run equery depends eudev to check which packages depend on eudev or if you added it to world somehow.

Much of the issue your experiencing i believe is due to systemd dependencies.

I just solved this one earlier today on a server build. there's a virtual package for udev i think that you need to remove along with eudev

Code:
virtual/udev

Removing that one should solve the circular dependency issue with systemd blockers.

It also appears you have systemd hard masked for some reason.

Code:
The following mask changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.unmask" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by sys-apps/dbus-1.10.18::gentoo[systemd]
# required by media-video/vlc-2.2.4-r1::gentoo[dbus]
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
# /etc/portage/package.mask/systemd:
=sys-apps/systemd-233-r1

I guess I shouldn't have removed eudev now the only network interface is loopback and my dmenu no longer works.

I looked and there are several things depending on virtual/udev including zfs which my linux is on

I'm really in the mess now. No network.

Well the re-emerge eudev. You shouldn't need network to do that. if that doesn't work, report the error messages, please.

Also, please provide the output of
Code:
emerge -1vp openrc
- John

You have to understand how your system is configured. You either don't need OpenRC (and eudev) or systemd. They serve the same purpose and don't work together.

I tried re-emerging eudev. I get the same 3 blocks

I'm going to just type the output of the "emerge -1vp openrc"

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

just to note I removed everything I had put in the make.conf for these eudev systemd and udev. Also I removed the package.mask files I had added. These were all just done in troubleshooting

[code] tags added for ease of reading, and appreciated in the future.

One more, please:
Code:
equery list -p tmpfiles

Hmm. Okay, you're going to need to provide me with the complete output of one of your emerges. Might as well be eudev:
Code:
emerge -v eudev
as you need that back anyway. I strongly suspect this was not a systemd install in the first place. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Wait. Let's quickly fix your network. If all you did was unmerge eudev, this should run to completion without error:
Code:
emerge -v --nodeps eudev
Let me know what happens.

It never was. I don't know why it's an issue now. I don't want systemd.

I'll see what I can do. Please remember, I have no network so all my "results" are typed since removing udev.

Ok, it looks like that you don't want systemd. For this case I've found that adding

USE=-systemd

and adding the mask for

sys-apps/systemd

This will help portage steer itself away from installing systemd, and also force packages to not pull in systemd if it's optional.

It seems that portage will try to pull in systemd when it can because a lot of apps, due to the popularity of other distributions, integrate fine with systemd. But it's your choice.

Please fix your network first, you have to be able to get new packages...

I can download the gentoo cd on another computer and burn it or is there a way just to download what I need and burn that....the portage tree?

Download the files on another system and copy into /usr/portage/distfiles - or manually configure your network like what you did for the installer...?

I'll download the cd. I can't manually configure it. ifconfig only shows the loopback after eudev removal

Lesson learned: never emerge --unmerge a_package unless you're sure it won't kill you... Use --depclean .

Chances are you probably need to modprobe usb_storage or whatnot to access your USB drives without udev, but I'm not sure what the state of your computer is currently...

If you've resorted to chroot, okay, add in the USE=-systemd in your make.conf and fix up the other problems(reinstall udev)...

Other option is to figure out what eudev source you have and install that. Run
Code:
ls /usr/portage/distfiles/eudev*
match that output up against a version of eudev that's still in Portage
Code:
equery list -p eudev
and then install the latest one of those
Code:
emerge -v --nodeps =eudev-[insert-version-here]
and report back.
