The only time the word Error appears as compile output (as opposed to beginning settings) is th
Code:

It turns out, systemd doesn't like it when the -jn value in makeopts to too large. Changed it to -j2 and systemd compiled.

Out of memory error? MAKEOPTS="-j32" is too large

The problem setting was -j12. I was building a new system with a "AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core Processor" and used the 2x core rule of thumb. Every week or so I've run into a package that fails to build at -j12 but will build at -j2. The error messages are never very informative.
