Error says need uClibc version 0.9.30, but I have 1.0.20

Hello world! So I am on my first gentoo-quest and am an ultra noob at this, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance. I only just touched a linux a couple of years ago (Debian) and fell in love with the freedom from all the crapware and lack-of-control the windows world (and apple) entail.

Still, I yearn to learn more and obtain even more control of my machines. I have heard that Gentoo is one such answer (other than, perhaps, a BSD of some sort).

Anywho, specifically to my issue:

I am trying to install a very minimal, command line only version of Gentoo on an old craptop (ASUS x54c; amd64). I'm also trying to use uClibc due to its lower-size, although this may be my undoing as it is what I'm having issues with atm.

I have been following the handbook for amd64, and am at the compile kernel stage (I'm using genkernel). However, it fails at this point for me. I'm at the point in the process where I am not even sure of what to ask, so I have come here in hopes someone can make some sense of this for me.

Here is the error I'm getting:

sys-libs/uclibc != sys-libs/uclibc-ng

There may be (uclibc) library naming conventions that prevent either the coreutils ebuild or the coreutils source code from finding your uclibc-ng build. I see no reference to uclibc in the coreutils ebuilds, so figure the message you present comes during the compile phase, and comes from inside the coreutils source code. I don't see that error message in coreutils-0.8.25 source code though.

The larger snippet you presented with the error message refers to coreutils/.ln.o.d and coreutils/id.c

Those locations don't correspond to the e.g. "src/id.o" locations I get when compiling coreutils-0.8.25.

Funny, I can install uclibc along side glibc, but if I try to install uclibc-ng, it pulls in dev-libs/libiconv, which is not compatible with glibc. Both uclibc and uclibc-ng would be built including USE=inconv

What version of coreutils?

Welcome to Gentoo.

Your ASUS x54c is well able to support a glibc based desktop install if you want.
glibc installs are better supported as its what most people use.

If you really want to use one of the other libc's I suggest you make a multiboot system and install a mainline Gentoo first.

You don't need to install a GUI. After you boot into your own install for the first time, what you install is up to you.
There will be almost nothing at that point.

If you leave a spare partition, you can install a system based on uClibc there once you have learned the Gentoo basics.
That way, you choose which distro to use at boot time.

All the downloaded source code goes to /usr/portage/distfiles unless you change the location with the DISTDIR= entry in make.conf.
The current setting is shown in emerge --info.

The downloaded files (you may need several) are compressed tarballs and not easy to work with. The ebuild command provides phase functions to help with that.
