Hello, All !
If I work with documents in libreoffice for a long time I have got a strange bug. Suddenly when I try to do something, machine clock stopped, and computer does not respond on any key, include Ctrl-Alt-F1 o Ctrl-Alt-Del, remote access without X works, but killing this application does not help, only reboot helps. Files /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.lod.old don't contains any errors. What kind of logs I have to see in order to localize and fix this bug ? My emerge --info is

Hello,
I see that you use nouveau as video module with Xorg. So, you must have an Nvidia graphic card. I have one too that I use with nouveau. Sometimes Xorg freeze. I cannot move anything. Ssh to Gentoo work but as you, stopping X do not give me a working screen. Reboot does. The kernel messages tell me
Code: | ...

So, check your kernel messages when X freeze.
This fault always happen when Seamonkey browser is the active window. So I suspect the Flash plugin again to be related to this fault. All Seamonkey plugins are now activated on demand only and I keep sure that Flash do no have any active process. If the fault happen again I will note all process to try to find the culprit.
On Internet you can see that users of nouveau report freezes. It's of course the Nvidia graphic cards who stop working with nouveau. Using the proprietary drivers from Nvidia would probably resolv the problem. nouveau is a driver who is the fruit of a reverse engineering work by the developpers and have some limits because, some features of the Nvidia cards only work with the signed Nvidia drivers. _________________ Paul |

OK, which way I have to check kernel messages,
I try to tail /var/log/messages, but nothing similar was not found. _________________ Best regards,

I'm often not sure about exactly where an error message is logged, and use
Not saying your error is logged there, but this is a way to see which files have the most recent information.
If killing processes (like the window manager, and/or "X") doesn't restore control on the affected machine, from the remote login I'd look at the output of `top` to see if some process is hogging the CPU; and I'd likely try to forcibly remove video modules. There is nothing to lose by this -- you plan to reboot already -- and it might identify the root cause. |

when you start "apps" "software" in a shell you sometime get feedback. e.g. k3b in a shell is very verbose. |

To check the kernel messages do
I am curently trying the modesetting module of Xorg as a replacement of nouveau. I see no difference. I obtain the same number of FPS (Frames Per Second) with Glxgears but modesetting is not a 2D accelerated driver like nouveau.
As I understand, the Linux nouveau driver is implicate in the Nvidia video freeze when the nouveau Xorg module is use. Nouveau is compiled in the Linux kernel image by me, so the graphic card cannot be reset by an other mean than reboot or poweroff. I think it's the same when the Linux graphic support is compiled as module.
Note that the same freeze appear for me with ArchLinux too on the same machine. I have a personnalised xorg.conf but I think that the problem have happen without it too. Probably that disabling the 2D acceleration of Xorg nouveau can help because the KMS of nouveau on the Linux side is not 2D accelerated and Xorg nouveau need KMS to work.
modesetting or nouveau without acceleration, it is not interesting to not have any acceleration with a modern graphic card. I use the ~amd64 versions of the Linux gentoo-sources and the xf86-video-nouveau to receive as soon as possible nouveau corrections. _________________ Paul |

Thank's Jaglover,
why there is no message related to the bug in Xorg logs and there are some Linux messages? _________________ Paul |

It's seem's to affect the Linux kernel too. Anyway, I want to continue to use nouveau to help it's development if I can and understand the cause of this freeze and hopefully find a solution. _________________ Paul |

Hello, colleagues !
I have got some more information. Command
Code: |
sudo tail -n 10000 /var/log/messages | grep -i 'nouveau'
|
shows that the before freeze produce messages
Code: |

Try to downgrade to xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.12.
That helped in my case but it will mean as well that you need to downgrade to xorg-server-1.18.x. You're lucky if you haven't emerged 1.19.x yet. |

But one moment that x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau has versions 1.0.13 or 1.0.14. _________________ Best regards,

Downgrade is only a workaround. As I said, I prefer to use the most recent versions of nouveau for Linux and Xorg. You have chances to see a correction. I think a graphic application can cause of the freeze of nouveau as well as nouveau itself. _________________ Paul |

| what I have to for more details ? | I'm not sure what you want to achieve here. If you do what's above, you will get the very latest xf86-video-nouveau driver. That will be fine for testing, but expect that the nouveau driver might not work. And it will probably pull an xorg version that does not work with xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.12
As it was pointed out (in an other tread) you can make X work again by setting the "modesetting" driver in the X config. It's included in xorg by default (no separate emerge). It even supports 3D acceleration - 'wine MassEffect2.exe' works for me with the modesetting driver - for me…
My system uses media-libs/mesa-17.0.4::gentoo with xf86-video-nouveau-1.0.12::my_local_repo. It seems that the mesa version doesn't play a big role.
If you want to revert to the -1.0.12 driver, did you try to create a local overlay? You could look for an overlay that does still have that version e.g. here http://gpo.zugaina.org/. The problem with the latter is that -1.0.12 might be kicked in the found repo sooner or later as well.
just in case: Code: | media-libs/mesa-17.0.4::gentoo USE="-bindist classic d3d9 -debug dri3 egl gallium gbm -gles1 gles2 llvm nptl opencl openmax osmesa -pax_kernel -pic (-selinux) vaapi -valgrind vdpau -vulkan wayland xa xvmc" ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)" VIDEO_CARDS="(-freedreno) -i915 -i965 -imx -intel nouveau -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeon -radeonsi (-vc4) (-vivante) -vmware"
x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau

Sorry, the howto I was referring to was in an email:
Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn wrote: | The modesetting driver is now integrated into the X server and supports [3D] acceleration via glamor.
It will automatically be used as fallback if nouveau is not installed, or if you have an xorg.conf that specifies the modesetting driver in the Device section.
…
You can start reading here:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_repository | So in order to use the modesetting driver I created the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-modesetting-dri.conf containing Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "modsetTest"
Driver "modesetting"
BusID "PCI:3:0:0"
EndSection | You need to adapt the BusID to your system. To identify that I used Quote: | $> lspci | grep NVIDIA
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK110B [GeForce GTX TITAN Z] (rev a1)
[…]
[…]
$> | I did choose the first entry. The second GPU/VGA did not show up with the modesetting driver. |
