hey ... I'm starting a new thread as my previous comments here on this issue are separate to the topic of freetype ... to recapitulate:

khayyam wrote:
I wonder if this isn't also the cause of my terminal (urxvt ... with xft enabled) being sluggish (noticeably so). I've never had snappy graphics (this machine is from 2006, and has an intel mobile 945GM ... eeeww), but it was tolerable ... until this latest xorg/freetype/mesa update. A typical 'emerge -pvq <atom>' will print the output, and then hang for 4, 5, perhaps 6, seconds until the prompt returns. Similarly (though not consistently) vim, or man, or less, will take 5,6,7 seconds to load a file, or manpage. Perhaps you've not noticed this (because you have modern graphics chips), but maybe some else has seen similar sluggishness? I should probably test the above before asking, but before I do so, and before I rollback all packages, I thought I'd throw this out there (in case others experienced similar). Also, it's only the terminal, other 'gui' apps (palemoon, mupdf) don't seem to be effected.

I did try tweeking my .Xresources (removing Xft.hinting, etc), and attempted to downgrade x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel but the previous version now fails to build with the current stack .... oiii. Also, I'm using 3.12.70-ck and so immediately suspect =x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216. Annoyingly, it's only in the past few weeks I resolved the issues I had with the previous update :P

Subsequently I'd mistakenly assumed the following resolved the issue ...

khayyam wrote:
I just quit X, and tested in the console, I created the same env (tmux), tried to reproduce, and couldn't. I then su'ed and rebuilt x11-terms/rxvt-unicode, on exiting I noticed an ~/.Xauthority (naughty), removed it, started X ... and the issue is now gone. I suspect the ~/.Xauthority but it may just have been urxvt .... sorry for the noise!!

That turned out to be premature, but I didn't want to comment further in that thread as it was obvious my issue was different to that of the OP. Since then I've discovered the actual culprit (serendipitously). Both =x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216 and 2.99.917_p20170313 cause the terminal to lag (particularly when using 'vim <file>', man, less, or emerge) and its not entirely consistant (which had me thinking it was the kernel, because is just seemed like some random I/O problem). Using the modesetting driver (without glamour, and so unaccelerated) this doesn't happen (and I've tested over the past day or so, and no similar effect has occurred). The previous version (not exhibiting this behaviour) is now gone from the tree (and not in the attic) so I'm stuck with it, or using an unaccelerated modesetting.

EDIT: I'd like to roll back, but the previous ebuilds nolonger exist, and can't be found in the attic, where are you supposed to find these nowardays?

best ... khay

What version(s) do you want to use? They should be recoverable from the Git history. As a quick example, x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel@866f9cf78bf7972b594b1e2a35ae96840e85af5b gets you access to some late 2016 snapshots that were subsequently dropped from the tree. You could use git log to go back to even earlier versions if needed. Post what version(s) you want and I can try to find them for you in history.

Hu ... thanks, that points to =x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20160621-r1 which is what I had previously, unfortunately it nolonger compiles (build.log), however, because modesetting doesn't exhibit the issue then this may in fact be an issue with =media-libs/mesa-13.0.5 (as modesetting has dri disabled ... older cards don't support glamor). So, I grabbed =media-libs/mesa-12.0.1 and =x11-base/xorg-server-1.18.4 (as xorg-server-1.19.2 depends on mesa-13.0.5) and was able to roll back (note that any x11-drivers/ built against xorg-server-1.19.2 will need to be re-merged) ... the issue seems to have now gone (fingers crossed).

For any one else following, this is the mask I currently have set:

/etc/portage/package.mask/xorg.package.mask:
>=media-libs/mesa-13.0.5
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2
>=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216

Thanks again, and best ... khay

UPDATE:

so the issue seems to be caused by =media-libs/mesa-13.0.5 (or perhaps some useflag I have enabled/disabled) as I've since updated to =x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2 and =x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170313 (or 2.99.917_p20170216) without the above problem.

Code:
% emerge -pvq x11-libs/mesa
[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/mesa-12.0.1  USE="classic dri3 egl gbm nptl -bindist -d3d9 -debug -gallium -gles1 -gles2 -llvm -opencl -openmax -osmesa -pax_kernel -pic (-selinux) -udev -vaapi -valgrind -vdpau -wayland -xa -xvmc" VIDEO_CARDS="i915 intel (-freedreno) -i965 -nouveau -r100 -r200 -r300 -r600 -radeon -radeonsi (-vc4) -vmware"
% egrep '^media-libs/mesa' /etc/portage/package.use/*
/etc/portage/package.use/i686.package.use:media-libs/mesa -gallium -llvm

I understand from this that xf86-video-intel doesn't use gallium3D (and as I remember I wasn't able to select this in eselect) so I've had this useflag disabled since my inital install (2012). Though enabled in mesa, dri3 isn't used (or enabled on) xf86-video-intel ... though this somewhat cryptic message in the metadata.xml suggest some change with the current package:

equery -NC u x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216 | grep dri3:
 - - dri3  : (Restricted to <=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20160621)

So, perhaps that might offer some clue, I'm tempted to rebuild mesa with '+gallium +llvm -dri3' but as this requires @x11-modules-rebuild, @preverved-rebuild (because of nettle, and libXScrnSaver), and because I'm otherwise busy, it'll have to wait. Right now it is only >=media-libs/mesa-13.0.5 in package.mask.

scratch that ... it took a few hours, but it reared its ugly head again, reverted to the previous package.mask:

/etc/portage/package.mask:
>=media-libs/mesa-13.0.5
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.2
>=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170216

Confirming this same issue.

Anyone seen open bugs for this? would love to follow it.

Seems this is a major regression... why does gentoo default to the modesetting driver when there is such a big performance hit (seems easily reproducible)?
I also noticed the gentoo wiki for intel is missing information to enable the "dri3" use flag etc

No change with the following:

=media-libs/mesa-17.2.7
=x11-base/xorg-server-1.19.5
=x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.99.917_p20170313
