Makes sense. I'm sure I'd adapt in a similar situation.

I quite like it. But I was turned onto the show by my friend's wife, who had defected from communist Romania when she was a teenager. She was describing all of the accuracies of the show, so I went into it with a better understanding than say the average Prime viewer.

It's not for everyone... but if you've been a student of the insanity of communist countries then I'd say you'll enjoy it.

Watched the first episode. I thought it was a remake. The quality was actually much better than I expected compared with some other communist propaganda I've seen.

In the intro, I think it was the director who compared it to being a propaganda piece similar to Red Dawn. Personally I didn't really think of Red Dawn as a serious propaganda film. Did you discuss the degree to which it was propaganda with your wife's friend? I'm curious if the show was any more "believable." Compared with early cold war propaganda leading to the fallout shelter business.

I'll definitely finish watching it.

Here are the bullet points which she gave me.

There were stories in the newspapers of American soldiers getting "Drunk on Pepsi".

The school uniforms were the same she wore.

It's filmed in Bucharest, which is the city she is from.

The song sung to the partner in the hospital to wake up (you'll find that later in the series), is one she was forced to sing all the time, so it's burned into her memory.

The US embassy has two huge fat guys eating cheeseburgers... that was the image portrayed of us.

The claim of no corrupt police officers in Romania was established dogma.

The drug deal in episode 1... where they said they needed money and were rebuked because they already had "health care, housing, food" etc... spot on for their propaganda.

The idea that the hellish socialized healthcare was the best in the world : Established dogma.

The idea that the best communists always had Marxist literature on them (you'll notice that a lot through the series). was established propaganda.

There were many more points she brought up, but essentially, the series was a perfect take down of Romanian communism from the 80s.

But how much of it did she believe, or was common to be believed at the time of the series?

I noticed several of the points you listed. And I was most blown away by the remark the captain made about how "there was a time when he would have lined everyone up and shot them, just in case they were guilty." Almost a reflection on "the good ole days."

She, like most people (I'm assuming the most people part) were doing nearly everything out of fear. There was no love for communism. The only people who seem to actually love communism are those in positions of power in communist systems, and Western idiots like AntiFa who have no real conception of the misery.

Dallas was a very popular show in Romania in the 80's. The government thought it would highlight the "decadence" of the West, but it totally backfired. Romanians wanted to live like the Ewings.

So probably few believed much if any of it. It is shocking that anyone other than despots would hope to achieve communism again. But, they serve as a hopeful reminder in that Romania was one of the few violent revolutions which succeeded.

Pilot episode of Oasis.

It was decent. I didn't know anything about it, so it has promise.

However, I read the wikipedia page which references the book on which it is based. There's a pretty big spoiler in paragraph 3 if you don't want to know anything. On the other hand, it makes what is likely to come less compelling for me.

Netflix original series are either very good or utter shit.

Case in point : Deathnote.

A Japanese anime series made into live action movie. It's appalling. Mostly because of the actor playing the lead.

OK, that was really good. I particularly liked the line "We'll win the Cold War within the decade."

Now if we can kill this hopefully last head of the hydra, we'll be fine.

Mary and Max.(2009), Australia

A clay puppet comedy drama movie in brown white and grey. Seemed like a real commie film. So, of course I loved it to bits.
Actually I wanted to find something to make me stop watching it, but I couldn't.
Mary and Max becomes pen pals. Max, an ass fat jew with assburgers in New York, Mary an 8 year fat girl in Australia somewhere. I don't remember the place.

I recommend it to anyone.

Valerian and the City and of 1000 Planets.

It wasn't great but it was a lot better than critics said it would be.

The biggest complaint critics seemed to have was the relationship between Valerian and Lorelei was misogynistic. And it was certainly.

The visuals were stunning. The action was pretty good. Would recommend as long as you don't get your panties in a wad about cheesy romance.

Wished there was more of Rihanna as a character. She was a pretty cool character with Mystique like powers.

Manhunt Unabomber on Netflix.

Very sympathetic portrayal of the Unabomber.

There's this British series called "Inside Number 9".

Definitely recommended.

Boomerang
Watched this one a little while back. A Murphy movie where he doesn't play a roomful of characters, but is still the wealthy, powerful protagonist who wins in the end. Decent. Worth watching if you enjoy his other stuff of similar thread (Coming to America, Vampire in Brooklyn, others?)

Transporter Refueled
Great Audi ad. No one could reasonably expect better from a sequel without the original star. The budget was not spent on plot or plot devices. The best scene isn't a car chase, but does involve the car in an escape scene about half-way through.

Next on the leaving prime list:
No Country for Old Men (leaving on 10/10)
Dark Places (10/22)
Pawn Sacrifice (10/22)

Today was its last day on Prime.

Watched it last night. For some reason I thought it was a Western.

And I almost quit watching it a few minutes in. But I like Jones, so I stuck with it, but something struck me as odd. And then in the closing credits, I knew why. I saw the name Coen.

Yeah I get the same feeling of worth Coen Brothers movies.

This movie is good though.

Do watch Fargo and Burn After Reading.
