TOS - S03E10 - Platos Stepchildren

I find it amazing how often the episodes are relevant this many years later, often in ways unlikely intended at the time.

I thought I remembered it, but couldn't place the dwarf character. As soon as I saw the opening scene, I remembered most of it as it happened except for some minor details. For example, I didn't remember Spock's "struggle," or that Nurse Chapel was in this episode, or that it was the episode that had "the kiss."

I remember when it first came out. Many people believe it was the first inter-racial kiss on TV, but it was not. It was the first kiss between a fictional white and fictional black couple. Kirk was busy with the inter-racial kisses that third season. He also kissed a Vietnamese actress that play Elan of Troyius.

I have always been a TOS fanatic. Just before the first season premiered, my dad had to go to England and Scotland for a six week business trip. Before he left, he bought us our first color TV. I got to watch Star Trek from the very beginning in color! That was a big deal then.

The third season was the best.

I think it remains by far the best series and characters, though I did eventually warm up to most of those on TNG (although I thought Picard would have been a better Admiral, but I digress). Not to mention how many episodes of TOS that TNG seemed to rely heavily on for inspiration.

I'm not sure I really have a best season. I'll take a look and see if I can formulate one (no penalties due to presence of Tribbles).

Quote:
There are many who claim that, even if the kiss was real, it was not the first interracial kiss on television, however, many of these incidents were not portrayed as the passionate kiss between Kirk and Uhura was. A good example of this is the friendly cheek-to-cheek kiss between Sammy Davis, Jr. and Nancy Sinatra on Movin' with Nancy in 1967, a year before "Plato's Stepchildren" aired.[6] Other instances are: Adventures in Paradise (1960) - "The Big Surf", between Gardner McKay and Pilar Seurat, and Laramie (1961) - "Dragan at the Door" (Season 3, Episode 1), by Nobu McCarthy and Robert Fuller.
Just before that, it references:
Quote:
Several takes of the scene were filmed, with different levels of contact between the actors, and many speculate on which version was used in the final cut of the episode. William Shatner recalls in Star Trek Memories that NBC insisted their lips never touch (the technique of turning their heads away from the camera was used to conceal this). However, Nichelle Nichols insists in her autobiography Beyond Uhura (written in 1994 after Shatner's book) that the kiss was real, even in takes where her head obscures their lips.[5]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plato's_Stepchildren#The_kiss

When I watched the episode the other day, the particular scene certainly looked more like Shatner's recollection, so I wonder if one of the other, unused takes, is what Nichols is recalling.

When I said the third season was best, I meant minus the episode, Spock's Brain, the third season was the best.

Haven't seen that one yet. I believe I have seen season 3 the least number of times. So far I've recognized the handful of episodes I've seen, but haven't remembered as many details.

Other than for obvious reasons "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" is somewhat funny. Except not.

Quote:
Mr. Spock: [On the bridge, after Lokai and Bele have beamed to the surface of Charon] And another life form has appeared on Cheron.

Uhura: That doesn't make any sense.

Mr. Spock: To expect sense from two mentalities of such extreme view points is not logical.

Sulu: Their planet's dead. Does it matter now which one's right?

Mr. Spock: Not to Lokai and Bele. All that matters to them is their hate.

Uhura: Do you suppose that's all they ever had, sir?

Captain James T. Kirk: No, but that's all they have left.

I thought I had seen all of TOS, but nothing really seemed familiar (enough) in The Lights of Zetar.

I made the mistake of watching one of the sequels (maybe the one you mention). I assumed it would have some of the strengths of the original, but it was just a lousy action flick that made ten times as much as it should have because of the name.

It's a terrible film with no regard for the original.

There's a sequel on the way in 2021.

It was the casting that did that in. Howard's character, Dearing should have been played by Tom Cruise.

Justice League.

One with the erased mustache.

Seems like 2 or 3 different movies directed by 2 or 3 different directors compressed into one. Recommended for people with ADHD.
