Hi guys,

I am looking into using a vpn server for some privacy from greedy ISP, and I was wondering what are the best servers out there. When I look at reviews I find lots of contradicting opinions; so far it looks like NordVPN is a good choice; no logging and fast.

What's your take?

Thanks,

Efo

So, you don't mean VPN server, you mean VPN service.

The only good one is your own. The rest belong to Trump, Putin, Ching Tung Po the People's Hacker, or Obwanga the fucking Nigerian scam artist.

Hi Bones McCracker,

You are right, it is more of a service than a server since the service provides a number of servers (if I understand how it works correctly). So I should rent a bunch of places in a number of countries and install my own severs there so I can VPN out of there... maybe with some onion routing... it may be too much. Do you think these vpn services like NordVPN are not worthy?

Thanks,

Efo

No, I was just joking and trying to say you can't trust anybody.

I don't know what the best service is, but I think somebody else here might, if you can explain in more detail how you are going to use it.

My main concern is ISP selling my traffic info to third parties. Maybe I am a little paranoid, but I just dont like the idea that all my traffic info can be available to people without my approval (identity theft?). On the other hand I need a trusted VPN service because I dont want them to sell my info either. I would say my main concern is privacy and secondly is speed.

I guess the main question is: can I trust VPN services more than ISP on the privacy aspect? Or, are privacy policies for ISP going in the direction of search engines?

what he is saying is that they all go through GCHQ so it doesn't matter. If you're going to rig something then call the Russians. If you want to intercept then call the British. If you want to kill lots of people on your side in a friendly fire mistake then seek out the Americans.

For all else see Norway.

No, all they have in Norway is stinky fish and horse-like facial features. Maybe you were thinking of the Dutch.

AirVPN.org looks good to me, especially after what Amber Rudd said - https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/762496885628870665

Any other recommendations?

hello there efo,

here is a site that made me go vpn: https://www.privacytools.io/
and here is vpn service i choose, payed with bitcoin: https://cryptostorm.is/

free vpn services are probably collecting your traffic, than selling. they have to make money somehow...

@bonecracker, hey bc, is there some good tutorial on how to set up own vpn? thanks in advance

To me a single user VPN seems pointless because if one were interested in your traffic they would just deanonymize your vpn rather than your home computer. Maybe it's good for bypassing your Isp, but wouldn't your vpn need an ISP as well?

Therefore the only good VPN server is the VPN server owned by someone you can blackmail.

I am in the same situation, and I wonder what your final decision has been. I have noted that the Gentoo wiki has configuration instructions for PrivateInternetAccess.

Thanks!

I'm using IPVanish. Merely because they had sale, $3.30 per month, this is the price as long as I keep it. I use it to bypass georestrictions and occasional P2P. No complaints so far.

Last VPN I used was an SSH tunnel to an OVH server I rented (don't do this, there are much better brands out there). Anything you can SSH to will work for that though.

I'm thinking about setting up wireguard from my laptop to home server when I'm travelling though; I know it's got big scary "this is alpha don't use it" warnings, but anyone got experience with that?
