I'm trying to get a Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition (Southern Islands, "Pitcairn XT") working with the AMDGPU drivers.

However, I am getting this error: "amdgpu_device_initialize failed" / "no screens found"

The relevant excerpt of my Xorg.0.log is as follows:
Code:

  • I do have CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU, CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_SI, CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_CIK, and CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU_USERPTR enabled.
  • CONFIG_DRM_RADEON has not been enabled.
  • My VIDEO_CARDS contains "amdgpu radeonsi radeon", and I ensured every package using them was recompiled.
  • Installed is media-libs/mesa-12.0.1:0 x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.18-r1:0 x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.70:0 x11-drivers/xf86-video-amdgpu-1.2.0:0 (The latest "stable" xf86-video-amdgpu, 1.1.0, is incompatible with Pitcairn.)
  • My user is in the "video" group, though not even root can successfully xinit/startx.
  • X -configure produces the same error, as well. (Even as root.)
  • This error occurs whether there are 1 or 2 monitors attached.
  • CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="intel-ucode/06-1a-04 radeon/pitcairn_ce.bin radeon/pitcairn_mc.bin radeon/pitcairn_me.bin radeon/pitcairn_pfp.bin radeon/pitcairn_rlc.bin radeon/pitcairn_smc.bin radeon/pitcairn_k_smc.bin radeon/TAHITI_uvd.bin radeon/TAHITI_vce.bin"
  • My xorg.conf is as follows (DRI=3 was added in an attempt to fix the error; it did not, however, work.)
    Code:
    Section "Device"
       Identifier "AMD"
       Driver "amdgpu"
       Option "DRI" "3"
    EndSEction

  • I have already Googled this, to no avail.

If there is any further information needed to help diagnose this error, I would be happy to provide it.

Got it working. The fix was to upgrade Mesa to version 13.

AMDGPU driver is WORKING NOW.

If you came here from e.g., Google: add the following to /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords to fix this:
Code:
x11-drivers/xf86-video-amdgpu ~amd64
x11-libs/libdrm ~amd64
=media-libs/mesa-13.0.5 ~amd64
(You have to reinstall these 3 packages, and then reboot, and then your graphics will work)
