Hi,

I tried to install 64-bit (amd64) Gentoo Linux on a VirtualBox VM by following the handbook. My exact steps were, I booted the Minimal Installation CD ISO for amd64 that was released 20170209. Then I created (using fdisk) the partition table:

Code:

/dev/sda1 - BIOS Boot partition - Size       2M
/dev/sda2 - Boot partition      - Size     128M
/dev/sda3 - Swap partition      - Size     512M
/dev/sda4 - Root partition      - Size   127.4G

I then ran:

Code:

mkfs.ext2 /dev/sda2
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda4

to set up the file systems. After this I setup swap with:

Code:

mkswap /dev/sda3
swapon /dev/sda3

then I ran:

Code:

mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo
wget -c http://distfiles.gentoo.org/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20170209/stage3-amd64-20170209.tar.bz2
mv stage3-amd64-20170209.tar.bz2 /mnt/gentoo
cd /mnt
tar xvjpf stage3-amd64-20170209.tar.bz2 --xattrs
mirrorselect -i -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/make.conf
mkdir /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf
cp /mnt/gentoo/usr/share/portage/config/repos.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/portage/repos.conf/gentoo.conf

after this I ran:

Code:

mount -t proc /proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount --make-rslave /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
mount --make-rslave /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys
cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/etc
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

then in this chroot I ran:

Code:

source /etc/profile
export PS1="(chroot) $PS1"
# running mkdir /boot is unnecessary as it already exists
mount /dev/sda2 /boot
emerge-webrsync

this last command returned several lines with the gist of:

Code:

tar: FILENAME: Cannot write: No space left on device

Something I think may be relevant is that running:

Code:

du -sh /

returns:

Code:

du: cannot access '/proc/13954/task/13954/fd/3': No such file or directory
du: cannot access '/proc/13954/task/13954/fdinfo/3': No such file or directory
du: cannot access '/proc/13954/fd/4': No such file or directory
du: cannot access '/proc/13954/fdinfo/4': No such file or directory
1802009 /

Any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks for your time,
Brenton

Never mind, I rebooted the live ISO and for some reason now everything seems to be working as expected.

When you get ENOSPC, check the output of both df -i and df. The same error code is used both for insufficient blocks to store file data and for insufficient inodes to create new files. The Portage tree contains many files, so even though they are small, you can get ENOSPC if the unpacker runs out of inodes while creating all the individual files.
